not a "kilt coat" but a kilt coat
I have a black leather coat that I generally wear with my kilts because it is long enough that it will help with winded pleats but it doesn't seem right with a kilt. I also have a brown bomber jacket my dad gave me but I don't have a brown sporran and that too looks funny (besides, it isn't water treated).
So I need a jacket that works with the kilt but I don't really need a kilt coat. It would be something to wear to class, the store, work, anywhere. I do not want to be "in costume", but the idea of an iverness coat is appealing.
Any ideas?

A biker style black leather jacket works, so does a jean jacket.

I've been watching the Inverness coats on eBay; They all seem to jump up to $250ish at the last minute.
I base my choices on wearing UKs, but I think that most short waisted leather jackets would work. Personally, I prefer non-elastisized waists, because of the way the elastic tends to gather high on my waist.
My advice would be to start combing through the various members photo-galleries and find a style that appeals to you. Right now, I'm on the look-out for a baja jacket because I like how it looks a Ron (Riverkilt).

find the closest army/navy surplus store and spend $35 on a black, or olive drab green flight(bomber) jacket ....I wear mine every where and nary a look
besides that ...it kinda gives you a little of a punk look, and people dont tend to give you bad comments when you're wearing it
yeah it might give the wrong impression....but if someone says something positive, you can reply with a smile and a positive comment back!

The Inverness Cape is really a functional garment designed to be worn over possibly more formal wear in cooler/wet weather. It is not the sort of thing you see very often in Scotland nowadays, except maybe in a lightweight nylon form when it is worn as a raincoat.
For general, everyday wear you cannot beat a leather bomber jacket. The length is perfect for the kilt and the elasticated waist keeps you snug. Here in the United Kingdom, they are perfectly adequate for wear right through the winter. I have two, one of each in brown and black leather, which makes the accessorising you mention, so much simpler. Also, some tartans work better with black whilst others are better with brown.
So, my advice: go for a leather bomber (or two!;))

I like the high waisted jackets better with kilts too. Another option from the military flight jacket look is the letterman style jackets.
I'm having a ball wearing my War 2 RAF replica battlejacket from What Price Glory. Added sergeant's stripes and U.S.A. shoulder flashes so its a replica of what my father wore as a Flying Sergeant in the RAF. Very high waisted though so works best with high waisted kilts.
The galleries are great places to get ideas.
Just saw a photo of a guy in a Utilikilt and a Hawaiian shirt. Have been struggling to make that look work. Think he found the answer. He wears the Hawaiian shirt open with a t-shirt that matches the color of the kilt. Think its in this month's UK Newsletter if I remember correctly.
Point is, using the galleries will give you great ideas and, a lot of places in my gallery, show you what to avoid

I've had a few conversations with Ian at glengarryhats.com
He is looking for a casual kilt jacket to market. I suggested something based on the British WWII Battledress jacket or the American Ike jacket but done in denim, leather or wool in something other than olive drab. It may be a while before anything gets off the ground, but it should make for a pretty versatile casual day jacket if it works out.

Just over at What Price Glory's website www.whatpriceglory.com and found Jerry has a replica War 2 replica wool enlisted Ike jacket for $145.

He has large sizes up to 52, even cut for big gut. Think I'll get one and add Sgt. stripes in honor of my Uncle Don who hiked across France and Germany in the front lines.
