New Kilt hose ordered!
Ok, I broke down and ordered a pair of kilt hose from the Almost Unwearoutable sock company
Although a little pricey, the lady was very nice and they are actually making them custom to fit my tree trunk calves! I also got the double thick ones.
Oatmeal with cable tops. She said they would be ready to ship next week. I'll post a review when they get here. I'm pretty excited to get a pair that might actually fit!

You'll want to make sure your toenails clipped before wearing those!

If you don't mind me asking ...what was the price on the ones you ordered? I too have big calves (19 to 20 inches) and need some kilt hose options. Also if you have found others that fit lease let me know where you found them.
Thanks
John

The 8 plys were 40 pounds, so yes I will be trim'n my nails before I put them on. But, I paid 20 pounds for hand knits that didn't fit. So I think it's worth it for a nice pair. I did have one nice set of hand knits that fit pretty good until they got tossed in the dryer by mistake.
Everything else seems too tight. I asked them how tight they were in the calves and she said to give her the size I needed and they'd custom knit them to my calves. Can't get better than that, so to me it's worth the price.

They are double spun wool and custom knit, plus they said they should last about 20 years. So given that, I can afford to have ONE pair ;) I'll just be happy to have a pair that don't make my feet turn blue.

Sounds sensible to me. One of the things my old man taught me: "Never compromise on footwear and tyres (tires)"

I just got my hose from almostunwearoutable (Man they need another name) yesterday. So turn around for custom made from scratch was about 10 days (from Northumberland to the US no less!). I informed the lady when I ordered them that I had 19.5 inch calves and most kilt hose fit me too tight to be comfortable(wool hose, not the cotton blends you could stretch over an oil drum). She said "no problem" we can knit them for developed calves.
Well I'll post a picture soon, but they are OUTSTANDING and fit like a, errrr sock? It isn't just a "bigger" sock, it actually flares out above the ankle so it hugs my leg and doesn't stretch out the lines of the hose. The cabled turn over tops are very impressive as well.
I ordered the heavy 4 ply ones, they are thick. But on my legs they look the way kilt hose should look, I'm kind of a thick guy .

Almost Unwearoutable...
I'll echo clancelt's endorsement of the Almost Unwearoutable Sock Company. I own two pairs of their hose, and they are the best kilt hose I have owned. Yes, they are about $70 US funds, but they are worth it and I plan ordering another pair from them soon.

Sounds like something my frugal grandmother would have said, may she rest in peace.

What kind of tops did you go for? I was kind of curious what the other styles looked like. You really can't tell much from the graphics on their website.
