Kiltless
I brought my only two UK kilts in to be shortened today. I didn't get it right when ordering or something and after seeing a picture of me that I posted, didn't like how long they looked.
I brought both in today and the lady said she never has done a kilt, but said it is easy to do, but time consuming. She really seemed knowledgeable. One will be done by this Friday so I can wear it this weekend, but it just seems odd NOT having any kilts in the house. Yes, I wish I could buy more but just got new glasses today too, and that was almost as much as a kilt. Well, better to see other kilts than not see that well. haha
I think once the alterations are done, I will go back in with my kilt on and offer to have our picture taken so she could put it up on her wall. Not that there are any other customers there, but maybe I will start something!

Dale,
Does this mean that you are doing a double jonesing? Already did the jones on their arrival and know on the alteration.
Yes it does sound odd by NOT having a Kilt especially after you already know the joy of them.

Guys have posted experiences here of being told it would be $1 per pleat to hem a kilt. That sounds outrageous to me. Did your tailor give you a clue as to what the charges would be? I'd be interested to hear the breakdown of what you were charged.

Good you have a local willing to do it.
Just for price comparison, UK charges $25 to "chop" a kilt. I've bought two off the scratch and dent rack that were too long (I wear a UK short) but it was worth it to have them chopped to short and still get the faster delivery and discounted price.
So anything up to $50 plus probably another $30 for back and forth shipping to UK and you got a fair/good deal.

I had to have a SWK kilt taken up about 1.5" recently. It cost me $30 in upstate NY. They did a very nice job and said that they had done a few other kilts for pipers in the past. Call around and ask if they've had any experience with kilts first. Someone who hasn't worked with kilts before doesn't understand how much material is really in a kilt.

I've seen this (UK too long) come up quite a few times. I've heard of people measured at there booth get a kilt thats too long and look for someone to hem it. Should you not be able to order or purchase a Uk and get the proper length.
Just a question

When I first talked to her, she looked at the kilt, checked the hem, and said, "This won't be hard to do at all, just time consuming." The when I asked about how much, she said it would be around $20. I shouldn't have told her there are about 5 yards of material, (I think), then she said, "Well, maybe up to $25.00." And that is what UK charges, but then there would be shipping too and a longer wait. I get one back on Friday so i can wear it this weekend to a play and to church.

I would belive
If the length is not correct, I would think it is better to be too long than too short. But that is just my humble opinion.
