I think it's a nice way to add a traditional touch...I like the idea.

    Maybe post a picture?

Argyll or "Tartan" hose are normally worn with traditional tartan kilts as part of formal "kit"; Whilst you do see a gent occassionally wearing them with day rigs, Normally they're worn with evening wear.

    Cheers,

I will not disagree with Todd, but I saw a photo once of a gent wearing tartan hose with a blck or charcoal coloured solid kilt. Now before the Uk crowd starts wearing them with cargo pocket kilts, this was a traditional kilt in a solid colour not one of the new style North American kilts and the socks complimented the colour of the kilt.

I have seen a lot of postings on this site about the argyle hose and the only reason I can see you not wearing them daily is most times they are WAY expensive. Can I repeat WAY.

Or you could cut your toe nails Daily.

If you have a cheap source let us know,

    I'd wear them MrBill

Are they expensive? Yes, but I view my pair as a sound investment. I paid more for them than I would "off-the-rack" hose and got a pair that, if properly maintained, will last for a long while and will not need replacing anytime soon.

You get what you pay for.

    cheap high quality Argyle hose

    Hi Everybody

In Japan you can buy very high quality Argyle hose for about US $ 22.00 a pair this hose is made in Japan and sold direct from the company's website ( In Japanese ) & the hose is also available from most good outdoor stores here. As some Japanese love to wear trad hiking gear and pretend they are hiking through the Swiss Alps in their Argyle hose & wool knickerbockers . I bought a pair of this hose quite a while back and the hose I purchased from my local outdoor shop come up over my knee but I've since found out they they are available in shorter lengths & a wide range of colors. If anybody is interested in obtaining some of these , let me know I guess with postage to the US ( for example ) they would work out to be about US $ 28.00 with postage. Here is a link to the site below , I'm sorry it's in Japanese but you can see what the offer etc

Excellent link Kiwi. Thanks. I've been thinking about trying to find some exciting hose, but most have been way too expensive. I'll have to put together a bit of formal wear to go with my kilt, and incude a pair of those hose.

How's things in Japan. Must be getting close to O-hanami? Have fun.

My only caution on these particular hose would be that they may not match an individual's tartan -- remember that tartan hose are usually made to match the tartan of your kilt.

    Just my twa bob's worth...

Being a cheap SOB from way back, I'd virtually learn Japanese to avoid paying for a traditional pair of handmade tartan hose!
However in my opinion, standard men's argyle socks (such as those on the site) are going to look pretty odd worn as kilt hose with a kilt.
