German Scots
Some of you may have seen other post about Medieval Fairs I have attended here in Germany this summer. I haven't found a true Highland Games even in the area yet.
This past weekend I attended a small Knight's tournament event at a castle about 80 miles south of here. It is located at the Schloss Hexenagger on top of a hill overlooking a small village. To get to it you drive through a very pretty river valley with limestone outcroppings and stands of pine.
The Pics at the link below under German Scots show a trumpet and drum band, part of the market area, the games arena, and some pics of one of the participating groups calling themselves the Scottish Highlanders. There is also a pic of one group representing Vikings and showing how strong a shield wall could be. (There is a guy from the right crashing into them) I also saw about a half-dozen others in kilts of various forms. No real comments or conversations however. It was too hot to do much except sit in the shade and sip something cool.
Nice family fun for kids of all ages (including me!)
Afterwards I stopped at a McDonald's about 30 minutes away. I don't think they saw many kilts. Some strange or surprised looks but no comments.
Finally, about 7:30 pm I got home and my wife and I walked down the street to a local Italian Ice Cream parlor. The proprietoress has seen us before, but not me in my kilt. She smiled, but no comments. There were 3 local young teen girls there. Didn't say anything while I was there, don't know about after I left.
Just my efforts to spread the word of the kilt in this part of Germany.
The other pics at the end are from a trip across the border to the Czech Republic last friday. Visited a spa town of Marienbad which was much visited by royalty and German visitors prior to WWI. Very pretty. Last pic is of the entrance to an underground Czech brewery/restaurant.
Final note, I wore slacks to Church this week. Several comments about "Where is your kilt?" Also had an interesting chat with a worker at the PX who is thinking about getting a kilt. Gave him some pointers to this forum and to SWK.
All in All, a nice weekend, albeit hot.
Regards to all,
Tom
