Another newbie joins the ranks.
Hello all.
I have always wanted a kilt, but until recently, I have been either too selfconscious or too broke to own one. (mostly the selfconscious thing) A couple weeks ago, I finally ordered a SWK economy in black. WOW! I absolutely love it! I have only ventured out of the house with it once so far though to my second job to pick up my paycheck. I got one of the new nylon sporrans from SWK coming in the mail and I have a belt that should work, considering this is just a casual kind of atire for me. I want to make sure I have all the appropriate accessories before I wear it out for the day.
I got to this board from a link posted by a member here, Nick, who also is a member at the armour archive. I can't wait to read up and learn more about kilt wearing! I've already spent an hour or so here before I posted this!
Anyway, I look forward to getting to know you folks in this community! Be prepared for some silly questions from me in the future.
First silly question.. How do you handle a question about wearing a kilt when someone asks you about your Scottish heritage, when as far as you know, you don't have any? The one time I wore it out, I had someone tell me that it wasn't proper for me to wear one since I'm not of scottish decent.

Welcome to the kilted community!
To answer your question: you tell them you're wearing it because it's comfortable and you like it. The key thing is to say it with confidence as it is a fact. Self-confidence is the most convincing way to sell people on your kilt-wearing. Then sit back and watch them hem and haw and try to process the information. After a while, it'll even get amusing for you.
There are lots of answers to the various questions you'll get about your kilt-wearing available on this site. Take a look around at the various posts and soak up the ambience... you'll get the hang of it.

welcome!
Jfellrath made exactly the right statement. Say whatever you are going to say with confidence. If you waffle on your response, who knows what can of worms you might answer. if you like the style or comfort or just want to stand out in the crowd, make sure you say it with confidence. Very few people will have an issue with someone who is obviosly confident in themself.

Welcome to the forum from Scotland. If anyone asks, tell them you wear kilts because they are comfortable. I am Scottish and often wear traditional tartan wool kilts, but I also wear polycotton and acryllic self colour kilts for casual wear. You certainly don't need to be Scottish to wear a kilt, as you will soon find out from the many nationalities of those who post on this site.

As Hamish says: "You don't have to be Scottish to be comfortable". Stay with XMarks and you will eventual get to know Hamish (and his kilts) and the rest of the rabble. Welcome from West Texas.

Yeah! What they said. A lot of the forum members are not of Scottish decent. I'm German and Welsh. I even have a personal family tartan registered with the Scottish Tartan Authority. Just tell'em kilts are comfortable and you like em. And welcome to the forum from east Texas.

Especially if you're wearing a solid color, the whole Scottish thing doesn't apply because Scottish kilts are traditionally (though not exclusively) associated with the tartan. Also, don't forget your kilt was made in Minnesota! Welcome to the forum. Use the search function and I'm sure you'll find answers to a lot of your questions.

That was my answer too once, and I thought I came up with it. Sorry Hamish, for using it too, but that is now my signature line for this forum.
We should find out who first wore blue jeans, wasn't it miners or cowboys? Then we could ask them if that is why they wear jeans. ha ha
Welcome to our group. And no question is silly, unless we give a silly reply.
DALE.

there are a lot of silly questions, just remember the only stupid question is the one you don't ask, because someone gets a pic of you wearing your kilt front-to-back and posts it here when you don't ask which side of the kilt is front!
