    Dervish review

I saw Dervish for the first time last night. They were playing in Flagstaff, Arizona as part of their USA tour. In a nutshell, I want to say if anyone here enjoys traditional Irish music, don't miss them if they come your way.

I've been a fan of Solas since I first saw them in 1996, and I have a tendency to compare singers with Karan Casey. So, let me put it this way: Karan Casey, and many of the more talented Irish female singers out there, have voices that sort of creep up on you, like a fog rolling over the black waters of a lake at midnight. They are the kinds of voices that make the little hairs stand up on the back of your neck.

The lead singer of Dervish, Cathy Jordan, has a different kind of voice. It is the voice of a beautiful woman who strides purposefully across the room, grabs your arm and yanks you on to the dance floor for the whirl of your life.

I've also never really understood it when reviewers always say "this band is just so tight musically". What the hell is that supposed to mean, really? Well, now I know. You kind of just need to hear it to appreciate it. Every single one of them was just right on with each other. It was amazing.

I feel rather lucky to because their usual accordian player had to go home. They picked up a guy from California who played accordian, harmonica and mouth harp. Hearing some of these traditional songs with a mouth harp added was amazing!

I ended up buying two of their CD's at the show and doing some more research into this group. I'd recommend if you have the chance, check them out. You can learn a bit more about them on their website at www.dervish.ie

I better sign off - I'm on a library computer and its going to shut down in two minutes!

    Cheers all,

I'm so envious you got to see Dervish live, they are a fav. band of mine, I have several of their CD's.

Cathy Jordan has one of the most incredible voices of any Irish singer.
The song "I Courted A Wee Girl" from 'At the end of the day" really bring out her talent.

With that recommendation, I will plan to see them in March.
We have a celtic concert series in Asheville.
I wish I could make it to all of them but I need to pick and choose.
My wife can only take traditional Irish and Scottish music in small doses.

A fine band and well respected by trad players myself included. I have only the record "spirit" which I had on high rotation when I first got hold of it. Thanks for the reminder Ialtog, I'll get back to it.
Sounds like they put on a top show for you. I'm jealous you got to see them live, I've never had the chance.
