2 Questions
Hi, I'm new to the whole world of kilts, I've always thought there were cool but I've always been put off by the price, especial as I'm a student and have a limited budget, but I've found a site selling kilts for just £45 so I thought I'd go for it.
I just wounded to know if anyone has one of these kilts and how good a quality they are, here's the link.
Secondly, I'm unsure weather to go for my family tartan (Anderson) or plain black. As it's just for casual wear, (down the pub, around campus, etc) I'm worried tartan would look to formal, On the other hand plain black might lead to it not been recognised as a kilt. I'm in England and solid color kilts are less common here than they are in the US. Your opinions pleas.

Hi Duncan and WELCOME!
In answer to your questions, I am not familiar with the company or the quality of the work, but I can tell you that the Polyviscose is very good material, and I have several Kilts made with that material and find them very sturdy and comfortable.
In regards to your second question it is entirely up to you. I have both solid and tartan, and no one really says anything bad about either, but then again, I am not known for being a small guy.
Just a thought so take it for what it is worth, if you are having qualms about what others may say about a solid not being a Kilt, I would probably select the tartan. Again just my thoughts.

I have no experience with those kilts...you can't expect breathtaking quality for £45, but they look like nice "starter kilts" to me.
They have your family tartan (nice one also),so...why not?
welcome aboard!

tartan!
The beauty of tartan is that it can be worn either formally or casually. There are many different styles of attire in Highland wear.
Go with the tartan. You'll be glad you did.

I have never seen those kilts (that I know of) but 16 oz/yard is a nice heavy weight, and though polyvicose is not wool, it is durable.
As to tartan vs. plain black, if you are worried about looking too formal, it's usually better to be overdressed than underdressed, and that tartan is darker, and would not be mistaken (at least among the cognescenti) for a dress version of a clan tartan, which would have more dominant white stripes. If solid colored kilts are not worn so much in the UK, you might feel more comfortable wearing tartan, and more appropriately dressed.
Another thing is how they hold up to wear and tear. Have you ever had a solid black or dark piece of clothing? Many of them show up lint, dog and cat hair and other things that cling to them easily. As a drag queen I once knew complained while repeatedly brushing her dark gray wool skirt, "It'll pick up everything but a man."
From only looking at them online, I would go with the tartan, since my guess is it will show wear less, and it sounds as if you might get more use out of it.

Can't comment on the kilts, but I've purchased 2 items from this vendor, and neither were as described on the site, and one was shipped with parts missing.

The 16 oz polyvicose, for example? Several members here who are knowledgable than me in such matters (Rocky, to name one) have yet to find a single source of 16 oz PV; 11 oz (11.5?) is the heaviest there is.
There are cheap kilts out there that aren't cheap, if that makes sense, and if you keep looking you'll find them. Searching through old posts here is a good place to start. And take a look at the sponsors here - for £57 or so, you could take a look at an USAKilts casual in Anderson.

it looks to me that this is an off shoot of some sort of http://www.heritageofscotland.com/ I havent gotten anything from them, but it seems to me they havent had the best reviews in here. It kinda bums me out that they could be bogus because my girlfriend just loves one of their wedding dresses, but at $3000 us dollars, it seems a bit risky to me. dress link

Wompet beat me to it. I would seriously question if it is 16oz. PV material. I fit is, Rocky has a standing offer of something free (a kilt perhaps) for anyone that can find him a source of 16oz PV.

Aye you can do better than 40 GBP - check ebay for the Anderson
Tartan kilt you should have 3 or more items to check on depending on the
timing of the auctions. You can go as low 30 GBP including S & H to
the USA; less if you are in the UK. This for a 5 yard poly fabric kilt.
Watch it though if you need size 38 or bigger most of the suppliers
are out of stock or charging more. If you are buying off ebay check
the sellers Feedback for customer satisfaction with the sale. If you
see anything negative in the recent past scroll down the feedback
and see just what the problem was to avoid repeating the past of
others. One item is going for 130 GBP with 15 GBP S & H to the USA.
This is a 6 yard hand made kilt. I have a dress stewart kilt from this
seller and I rate his work as average - I would not buy from him
again. One of the sellers was out of the size 38 and said he would
make me a custom 8 yard kilt for 150 GBP including S & H. This was
out of range for my budget. This same seller was selling 30-36 kilts
for 40 GBP - 15 GBP S & H. Bait and Switch tactics - I have ?????s
You can do better - perhaps by simply waiting. If you are in the USA
watch the currency exchange US$/GBP. The exchange is not so good
now. If you are not in hurry wait a week and check it again. These
auctions are going on all the time. You could save as much $10.00
with a bit of patience.
Good Luck;
