bare kilties
Sorry for the misleading title, folks. It's intended to pique interest. Actually it's bear kilties. My friend Jonathan and I drove up to Tug Hill Trading, where I got my skunk pelt. He's looking to make a badger sporran for his dad for xmas. They didn't have what he wanted but we managed to spend money anyhow. He got some of the leather he'll need.
I managed scored 1/4 of a beautifully tanned elk hide (about 708 sq. ft.) for future projects (i.e., a nice rob-roy style sporran)

Good pair of kilts, there, but the bear seems uninterested

I paid $40 for it. I have since seen them on ebay for $20. I'm Looking for a good badger with feet and claws now. I've seen them for nywhere from $55 to $150.

I've never heard anything but good about elk hide...supposed to be soft, strong and supple. Sounds like excellent sporran material. Guess that the journey to the trading post enhances the whole sporran making eperience...nothing like picking it out yourself.
Now...did you haggle or just pay the asked price?
You've got to keep your haggling in practice, you know.

They are so nice there I have a tough time haggling - it's a small operation and I like to support it. That being said, if their pelts are twicw the cost of ones I can get elsewhere, I need to think on that. I also bought some xmas gifts as well, so they made out.

You all might try the Moscow hide and fur company in Idaho. Do a Goggle and check out what they have, I've always gotten very good leather products from them for decent prices.
