(for pipers) I do stupid $#!t so you dont have to!!!

well what can I say .....I sit here still in shock .....my pipes lay in about 25 pieces across the floor .......and all I wanted to do was clean up the ferrels and make them shiny again...........

I have done this plenty of times before....I guess I just wasnt paying enough attention, or something
I was using the buffing wheel and some jewlers rouge to clean up my pipes, I was on the second to last ferrel.... the bag ( stocks) were done ....both tenors... I was on the top section of the bass....almost done........ok done......go to pull away from the buffing wheel, and the drone cord came forward and caught on the buffing wheel :crap: .....needless to say I gotta buy new sticks and contrary to popular belief polypenco pipes ARENT indestructable....oh and now my E finger is twice the size of all the rest of my fingers..

I do this to share my stupidity not ask for advice or armchair quarter backing I know I F*#$ed up and now I'm gonna pay for it ....760.00 to be exact....so much for playing at X-mas time.....I guess even though its a royal pain in the @$$ next time I am gonna pull off the cords COMPLETELY.....yeah ...I know hindsight 20/20

I picked a bad week to decide to quit tobacco (6 days btw )

    live and learn huh?

I'm so sorry to hear about the disasters kiltedfirepiper and hope your fingers and the pipes are soon back in fine fettle.

I have decided to give piping a try and have ordered a practice chanter and a course from the College of Piping, the pipes will come later!

    HOLY CRAP!!

My condolences upon the death of your pipes (I'd be devestated!), but I'm glad you weren't hurt any worse than you were in the explosion. Dunbar's a reputable maker; are their ferrules really so bad they need compounding? My McCallum's are electroplated nickel silver; on a high speed wheel I'd be afraid of taking off more than just the tarnish, even with rouge.

It can be quite scary just how fast things can suddenly go bad wrong with power tools (particularly big stationary ones)...glad it was your drone cord and not your sleeve.

    Wow.

    Many, many condolences.

Congrats on giving up tobacco, though ... hang in there!

    Hi,

Wow, glad you weren't more seriously injured. As a furniture maker, I can attest to the fact that power tool accidents happen in the blink of an eye-or faster-consequently, I hope you always make it a point to wear safety glasses.

When working on tools that spin-lathe, grinder, etc., its actually a very good idea to wear both safety glasses and a face shield. I've had, on more than one occasion, the frightening experience of having pieces "explode" while being turned and the face shield prevented facial injuries.

Yikes! I'll bet that was exciting for a few seconds. I thought the whole point of those pipes was that there's no maintenance. Oh well. In the future maybe you can learn to appreciate the rich patina that develops when you don't mess with them. That's the excuse I use. I hope your finger is back in shape real soon. You're lucky nothing worse happened.

    And the word is "ferrule".
