    Next project...

Ok... this first post is really looking for opinions. BEar with me... this IS going to be a DiY share in the end.

On Monday, I ordered J Charles Thompson's book. One of the first things I intend to do when I get it is utilize the included sporran pattern to make a Rob Roy style sporran using gray suede. I've got 17 sq. ft. of gray suede just begging to be used... what better way to put it to use.

    Any comments on the concept?

Certainly, as soon as the book shows and I commence the project, I'll get photos along the process and share.

Please let me know what you think of the book. I have been considering it for a while, and would like to know if it's worth the money...

I can't wait to see the sporran! I am a Rob Roy sporran fan, and checking out the different variations of it help will help in my second sporran attempt.

Best of Luck! Keep us posted!

I think there are some Freelander models that are sorta made inside-out if you will, so that it's the sueded side out. From what I recall they were quite sharp looking!

Yes... I found it on e-bay. 3.5 ounce gray suede. 17.4 square feet for $32 total, shipped. It seemed like a great price, so I jumped on it. It looks very nice. I had originally intended to use it for gussets on other sporrans. I think there's quite enough of it to do a Rob Roy or two plus a few gussets.

I will certainly give my opinion on the book, and will definately share pictures of the project as it developes.

Take a deep breath, BLAZN, and remember; patience is a virtue. The tools I used for mine were a fabric cutting roller to cut the leather, waxed embroidery thread (I used a chunk of beeswax), lacing needle, diamond-shaped 4-prong punch, water clean-up leather weld, 3/16" eyelets and eyelet punch. You will need to use some 3-4 oz. oil-tanned or tooling leather as front stiffener and flap. You can start working on some concptual templates for cutting the fron and back on ggraph paper. Make sure to add a seam allowance to your finished dimensions.

Skin for a Inverness type sporran

    Hi Turpin,
I have ortdered a heavy deer skin (in black) of 3-4 oz weight to use for a sporran. Will this work ok for the pouch and the flap/front stiffner ?

Improv1, I ordered the book already. Should arrive any day now. I'll bring it the next time we hook up.

Thanks Turpin for posting the tools and material you used. I have been contemplating a similar piece, so I may just have to find the book and get to it.
