Quick advice!
There are to be a number of kilted men at my wedding - both involved and attending. The wedding party, ushers and ring bearers are all wearing rented 16oz 8yarders, and I'm wearing my own Robertson tank. My MC would like to wear one as well, but wants to get his own - he's a Wallace. However, he's not willing to plunk down the serious money required to get a 16oz wool kilt - even a 5 yarder. It's not something he'll wear very often. It's more like if he can get something cheap enough, great, if not, he'll just rent one.
I looked at USAK for him. The semi-trad is borderline too expensive.. I haven't asked, but I don't think he'd go for it. The casual is probably ok price wise, but I'm concerned about the look - given that it's a wedding and everyone else is more or less wearing genuine, traditional style wool tanks. Maybe Rocky's around - can you make a casual that just sits a bit higher with the larger belt loops? Can it be worn formally? He'll be renting a PC et al to go with it.
I also checked out SWK. Unfortunately they only have the economy in Wallace. Now I still have to get his measurements so I'm not sure if SWK is even an option because of the length (he's a bit on the short side). But if that works out ok - I have the same concern. Will an economy stand up to the tanks? Or will he look like the guy that couldn't afford a real kilt .. ? I have an SWK standard - and I know it's quality.. if they had Wallace in standard I wouldn't have any questions at all.. but I've never seen an economy. For those here that have BOTH SWK standard and economy kilts, how do they stack up?

The first picture on this link is of a USA Casual kilt next to a 8 yard County Laois tank. The coat I transformed myself from a tuxedo jacket. Had I known a little better at the time I would have had Rocky leave off the patch which he does. I am sure that opinions will vary, but at the time it was what I had, and since the groom didn't have a problem with it I went ahead and wore it, I was comfortable all night, and I don't know that any one noticed. I now have two 5 yard wool kilts and a 8 yard 16 oz strome on the way (hurry up Rocky). It is truly your call in the end but I thought giving you a picture would help.
Enjoy the wedding.

That's the great thing about USA Kilts, you give rocky the measurements and that's the kilt you get.
If you want the waist on your navel, measure your waist at the navel and measure the length from the navel to where you want the bottom edge to be and that's how big your kilt will be.
I have worn a USA casual to a wedding and it was fine. Of course I was the only kilt there and no one would have known the difference anyway.

I think the SWK would be fine, particularly at that price.
He can either wear it high like kilts are supposed to be, or have it hemmed.

And most people will recognize the kilt for what it is. The idea that the kilt was traditionally made of wool will not even cross their minds. Add it to a sporran and PC and most folks will not be able to tell the difference.
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

Stillwater has a $44 economy in Wallace.
If only I had everything up and running, I might could help more. 96 District Storehouse has a bolt of a heavy, but non-worsted, 100% wool Wallace tartan (hard on one side/fuzzy on other) for $12/yd (us). The selvedge is good, but has gray threads (which I kinda like). I have 4 yards that I am prototyping a machined box-pleat (now, to get the machine). The material should make a good kilt.

If need one and can't make it yourself, I'd say go to Rocky. His are nice and WELL worth the price.

Can we make it sit higher on his waist? Sure! Tell him to take the measurements from the higher points on his body (basically, at the naval).
Can we do larger loops? Sure! Tell him to specify that when he orders.
Will it look good "dressed up" with a charlie? I wouldn't, but some of our customers have done it.
Also... to echo Keith's comments... tell him to ask to have the patch left off. We'll GLADLY leave it off on request.

Both the USAK or the SWK are awesome looking kilts. I don't think anyone will be checking on the weight or material, they'll be checking out you and the bride! No worries man.

I own two USAK Casuals and would not think twice to waer it to a dress up event. I will have a kilted wedding to shoot here soon and will probably wear my MacKenzie Dress tartan. I have never worn a Tank so right now I could not tell you the diffrence. But for me I works fine and all others don't seem to mind.
