Hat Idea
Normally as headwear I wear a wide-brimmed heavy felt fedora. I love that hat, it's rugged, versatile, and looks darn spiffy. But I love hats, so I was thinking of something else I could wear (variety is the spice of life after all.)
Now, with all due respect to Dreadbelly, I'm not that fond of tams. They're fine on other people, but I don't particularly want to wear one. The only beret-esque hat I've worn is the old BSA beret (it was my dad's, I'm only 23.)
I've been thinking of making myself a Henrician bonnet, also known as a flat cap, a hat worn in Tudor England. It looks like a beret, but it's got a brim, which I think is why I like it better (I'm a big fan of brims). That, and the fact that it's an historical piece of headgear. They could be large and kind of silly, but the more regualr size is perfect.
I suppose it's a bit of a mix, wearing a Tudor English hat with a kilt, but I'd wear it while betrousered as well. It's not so much a kilt hat, it's a hat to wear all the time, part of that time being kilted. Certainly not giving up my fedora, but I thought it would be a neat project. Now I just have to decide what kind of material to make it out of.

Do you have a picture of one of these Henrician bonnets?

A lot of us wear regular flat-brim caps, also known as driving caps or newsboys. I actually wear it more without kilts than with.
It's a less costumish alternative to the Henry hat you mentioned.
I was a Boy Scout when those red berets were introduced. My entire troop refused to wear them.

A good tweed driving hat is a blessing in the winter. (Like Nick, I wear a wool felt defora quite a bit in the winter. In fact, if it's cold, I'm gonna have either a fedora, a driving hat, or a bonnet; bonnet more often that not.)
Another good thing about a driving hat is that it can be had in cotton dck for summer wear.

I have a Donnegal tweed driving cap I wear in the cooler weather. Very comfortable and practical.

This is a Tudor era flat cap. Mine'll probably have a slightly smaller crown (flatter and less puffed.)

I crocheted a hat that looks an awful lot like that when I was trying to make a dreadlock tam with a sun hat brim. Turned out badly. I should try again with this picture in mind.

These hats look remarkably similar to the hats worn by the afghans.
