A possibly non-existant tartan?
I visited Dunkeld quite a while ago and really loved the tartan in the picture 'The Macdonald children' by Jeremiah Davison. (Pictured below.)
Now, as far as I know no-one has been able to identify it as being any actual tartan. All they can say is that it is similar to both the Macdonald, Lord of the isles ancient red and the Macdonald of Sleat.
Now, I'm getting a Macdonald, Lord of the isles for my wedding, but I'd be interested in getting one in this unknown tartan, too.
So my question is, how do I get someone to even weave it for me let alone make a kilt out of it?

Arlen:
If you were on this side of the pond, I'd suggest getting in touch with Matt Newsome, who has a source for small runs of custom woven kilting tartan. In fact, it might be a good idea anyway, since Matt is "the tartan guy" and probably knows of a source in Scotland as well.
Best of luck!

Thanks. I'll have to get n touch with Matt and see if he can help. It's a ways of, but at least I'll know how much to save.

There are actually a few different tartans being worn in that painting, if you look closely.
The boy on the left is wearing the tartan that today we call MacDonald of the Isles Red (same as MacDonald of Sleat but with an added black line).
The boy on the right is wearing the tartan called MacQuarrie today in his coat. His kilt is in a different tartan, and I haven't looked closely enough at it to ID it.
Of course their hose are in the "MacMedic" tartan. :-)
Aye,
Matt

*Laughs* Do you have to be in the red cross to wear those?
Thanks a lot, Matt. You've been a great help. I might get a macdonald of the isles Red, as I really quite like that now that I've seen a sample. As far as I recall, the kilt was the same as the jacket.
