    Thinking of a great kilt

I tried a search but couldn't find what I need, so. I am a historical reenactor. I am thinking of getting a great kilt and I am wondering what style of pleating would be appropriate for the 1750's?

    Thanks
    Cheers

Box pleats would be a good and accurate choice. Takes up less fabric and makes for a more balanced kilt.

Great kilts are hand pleated everytime you put it on. No reason why you couldn't box pleat it, but much easier to just use knife pleats.

No pleating, really. The great kilt (belted plaid) was really more randomly gathered than formally pleated.

Welcome back, OS! If you wore a greatkilt in the 1750's, they'd clap you in irons and ship you off to the colonies .

I'd say just bunch it up in whatever fashion you like... quick handpleating with no regard to sett would likely be most accurate, and even these would look "sloppy" by tailored kilt standards I think.
Gather it up, and belt it on... done.

Try this site. There are others which make it plain, too.

I only wear my great kilt for very formal occassions with a doublet, lace, and the whole ball of wax. It is a really stunning outfit when properly worn, so you won't be restricted to reenacting; you can wear for other occassions as well.

Here's a carefully rendered period image, which clearly shows the pleating, or gathering, or scrunching....

Thanks everyone for the advice and links, although a great kilt is hand pleated before wearing I am planning to have cheater pleats stitched in.
