    Does size matter?

Crossing the Canadian / US border, my friends and I decided to stop at the duty-free to see if there were any good values to be had. Amongst our discoveries was, quite possibly, the largest bottle of Scotch that I have ever seen - 4.5 litres and for a mere $161.00USD.

As a non-Scotch drinker I have no idea if this is swill or not, but it's 12 years old now and I figured for sheer size it would be at least 18 before I saw the bottom of the bottle.

That's my wee little hand holding my phone for a scale reference (with apologies to Tattoo Bradley for the presence of a Treo 700 on the forum )

    Dram anyone...everyone?

I bought a two-litre bottle of Bushmill's last year, and the by the time I'd gotten to the bottom of the bottle, it tasted much worse than it had at the top -- I suspect oxidation. I hope that doesn't happen with your large bottle.

That's a big bottle! Black Label is an export blend, that is (was?) popular the U.S. I know you were only kidding, but for future reference, whisky doesn't age in the bottle, so a 12 year old will remain that, even 6 years hence.

    Best regards,

    Jake

I was going to respond tactfully that size does not matter, just because the drop of your Maple leaf CCK is 3" less than mine... but this is about booze right?

Well, that Black Label is the next step up fom the more common Red Label next to it, which is pretty well the most 'generic' Scotch available....

VERY bad idea... unless ya arr a serious alcoholic....

this threid will tell ya how an why...

Pour1Malt's E'erything Ya Need Tae Ken Aboot Malt Whisky!

    specifically luek a' this section...

    Quote:
"how long will malt whisky keep in an open bottle?"

the air that gets intae a bottle does degrade the whisky...

maistly it is the alcohol evaporatin' that changes the flavours..

but it is maire complicated than that....

an' ai dinnae ken enough aboot chemistry tae explain it...

basically, yince a bottle is half empty ya have aboot 6 months tae drink it befair the flavours change (rather dramatically tae!)

keep this in mind when orderin malt a' a pub that disnae sell a lot o' malt...

maist o' they bottles arr wa' past 6 months auld!
wi' a muckle huge bottle like that- ya cannae possibly drink it all whilst it still tastes guid....

an wi' JW black... e'en a' it's best- it's no very guid!
