I just got back from the barber shop, and my kilt seemed to draw conversation much more than normal, but two things came up that I would like to share.
Getting kilt hose in large/larger sizes: I have this problem; I have huge calves. Very few kilt hose feel comfortable right out of the package. What I have taken to doing is to do a controlled stretch. I first wear the hose one day, to see just how tight they are. I then wash them in cold water, and while they are still wet, I place the top end onto an old style wooden clamp.
I then slowly open up the clamp to a pre-set mark (re-wetting the hose if needed) and let them dry. Again, you open the clamp SLOWLY! After doing this at each washing, three times or less, the hose retain this larger size through subsequent repeated washings.
Sporran wear: One of the other customers, who sometimes wears a kilt, said the sporran bothered him, hanging in front. As was stated in his wonderful book So you’re going to wear the kilt! The late J. Charles Thompson told us that it’s perfectly OK to shift the sporran over onto your hip. If memory serves he was talking about when dancing, but this also works when I’m out at my workbench. If it gets in the way, just grab it with either hand and shift it onto a hip! Now why I don’t take the words of Mr. Thompson as written in gold, his book is well worth a read by all the newly kilted.
