Forgot Flashes
Just returned from a funeral for a mother of two friends of mine. She had Breast cancer and had been suffering for the past two months. She was 87 and ready too join her husband who pasted last year.
Three elderly ladies came up to me at the funeral and wanted to know about my family tree and why I wore a kilt and in each case they all said their fathers all wore kilts for special and they were proud I wore mine for the funeral.
Got home and the flashes were in the draw I took every thing out of looking for them before I left (damn gremlins)

They are the red ones I have to go with Turpins sporran.

Looks great just the same.
I don't posses Flashes or Sgian Dhu, nor Ghillies, too 'Costumey' . I wear Kilts as daily garments not fancy dress. But to me,personally, formal really requires a Fly plaid - with or without a PC. (No accounting for taste, eh?). My Avatar depicts my idea of Formal. Doesn't look too bad?

Actually I think the dark tartan kilt, with black jacket and hose looks just fine for a funeral and I think red flashes would have spoiled the outfit on such an occasion.

Do you want us all to help you look for them Mr. Bill?
You look very sharp indeed, I'm sure they appreciated your respects at the ceremony.

LOL. Yeah, they would have gone good with the sporran, but I'm going to agree with cessna152towser that I think it might have been too much.
I think you look very formal and very appropriate looking for a funeral. Good on ya.

I think the outfit looks wonderful sans flashes, ATM I can not wear my flashes as my left leg has decided to swell up, so flashes are off until this gets sorted out.

Mourning tartans
I have read that Victorians, with their cult of mourning, sometimes wore mourning tartans, that is, their ususal tartan pattern but in black and white. I guess those who couldn't afford to have their own tartan woven especially in that color scheme, or didn't have time, could have worn the black and white Menzies.
Does anyone know if there was ever a custom of men (or women, too, I guess) wearing black and white tartan for a proscribed period of time, then going to mauve, as did widows or others who had lost close family members?
I know that black is the new black, etc, but some of us are getting to an age when we go to more funerals then we used to, and it might be nice to wear something less dressily sophisticated and perhaps more appropriate to such an ocassion.
