People notice the derndest things.
Without going into too much detail, I was feeling a little 'confined' by yesterday afternoon and decided to change from trousers to a kilt for going out to my bible study. Since it's cool in Sydney at this time of year, my only choice was my PV NeoKilt. I left on my coloured business shirt and wool jumper, but changed the socks for some long football socks (don't have any proper kilt hose - a lack I want to remedy as I understand they're much thicker). I also bowed to comfort and donned a pair of ... sheepskin ugh boots. (Hey! My feet were cold!) Oh and the kilt is not a tartan, it's snow camo.
My friends had seen me wearing that one before, so they would recognise it as a kilt. But one guy was wanting to know where my 'dirk' (just how do you pronounce sgian dubh, or however you spell it? ) was and maintained I wasn't properly regimental without it! I actually said he wouldn't know if I was Regimental or not, referring to The Question, but that went over his head. No comments about my unorthodox footwear, note.
Then when his wife added something about a proper scottish kilt, I felt I had to point out to them that I'd been reminded that I know a heck of a lot more about kilts than they realize. Ah well. At least I can get away with that and there were no hard feelings. And it did forestall them making fools of themselves, which was my intention. But obsessing over the sgian dubh? ![Think](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/think.gif)

Thanks! Actually, I'm impressed I managed to just spell it correctly...

Yes, I too have noticed that some "gentlemen" acquired in whatever their significant other/mommy found at Wall Mart/K Mart can get to feeling quite inferior when a kilted man starts getting glances from the ladies/other admiring types in just about any social situation.
Even when said kilted man is fat and bald. This inferiority occasionally leads to an attack on the particulars of your outfit. They know you have them bested, so they feel impelled to indict you as some sort of style fool.
These "men" might be just smart enough to know that outright questioning your masculinity when females/others in proximity are impressed by it is not a good move.
They are not smart enough to realize that charging into a battle of wits unarmed won't improve their stock with the females/others under consideration.
Classic Beta Male behavior. A true Alpha Male will usually be complimentary and let the ladies/others know that his masculinity and self image is still secure, even though the fat bald guy has him badly out dressed.
An advanced Alpha may even ask you how he can get a kilt of his own, loud enough to be heard.

I was in Florida earlier in the summer for a wedding. My wife and I went to an outlet mall near the hotel. The temperature was in the 90's so with my kilt, USAKilts Scotland National, I wore a knit shirt and Crocs (similar to clogs). Since it was hot I chose not to ware hose. The only comment I got was a man that walked past and made the comment "No sgian dubh" as he walked past.
I find it interesting what comments you get. Frequently they don't seem what to want to directly comment on the kilt, so they find something else to comment on.

Alternatively, you could always tell them that "The coroner hasn't released it yet".
Would depend on the situation perhaps

Never bothered getting one; too 'fancy dress', besides, why on earth would I want to walk around with a dagger stuck down my sock? Better to have a brick in my Sporran. (I said "Brick" guys!)

Around here, if a dagger down your sock is all you're carrying, you're considered under-armed.

Or, "It's more of a challenge just using my hands and feet."
