Hose?
Which color do you consider more of a dressier pair of hose? Black, the ever-present cream/off-white, or some other color?
To me the cream or white go with all colors of tartans, but I think black looks nice when dressing up.

Bryan,
See the photo and response about a funeral I attended.

I have some off white wool and cotten but for dress I felt black was best.

I really think it depends on the colors and hues in your kilt. You want to go with something that will accent and enhance your kilt without over stating it. I personally am not a fan of the white hose as an end all to some idea of "dressy". I think that Lovat green looks very good, dress or casual with my Ancient Grant tartan. Several colors will go with just about anything and may be more appropriate for casual such as the Oatmeal colors and greys. As MbHandyfound out , try a color or two, or if you can take the kilt or a swatch and compare it to colors available and see what strikes your fancy and looks dressy.

As a general rule black kilt hose dress up very nicely, I think it looks much better than the standard cream or off white. To my way of thinking if a Prince Charlie is the kilted man's tuxedo, then ask yourself would you wear a tuxedo with white, or off white socks? I know I would not. I do own a pair of off white hose as they were a gift, however they have been relegated to the back of the list and are only worn now if every other pair is dirty.

The dressiest hose are diced, or argyll that match your kilt. They are also the most expensive, so some years ago the merchants who rent out formal kilt outfits decided to save money by starting the myth that white hose are appropriate for formal wear, and it caught on.
To me white are for pipers, especially if they have popcorn cuffs.
Cream/oatmeal, colored, and black are for day wear or informal, casual events.
Of course anyone can wear anything he wants, but that does not mean that he should.

I think you have to be very careful with black or even navy blue hose. If your tartan colors are predominantly dark colors you could end up looking "bottom heavy." Its all really about visual balance.

I agree. And I will fall back to cream/off-white if I don't have hose in a colour that will accent the kilt I wear. I've never attended a funeral, but I would think that black hose would suffice.

I know everyone says that diced or argyll are the dressiest hose, but I'm just not a fan of the way they look... to my eyes they almost seem to clash with most tartan patterns I've seen them with... But again, to each their own.
I personally like black kilt hose when dressing up, though I have yet to have the occasion, nor do I own black kilt hose... but just from the pics I've seen I like the looks of black hose.

You must not have seen them contrasted against fishbelly white skin and varicose veins like mine. It's not pretty.
