    Kilted in a City

I wore my kilt yesterday, to a Youth Friends mentor's celebration. Nothing big, just wore my KC chief's polo, kilt, hose, flashes, and Ghillie brogues.

First comment I got was "Why are you wearing a skirt?" My response was "It's not a skirt, it's a kilt." I then turned and walked away. Mind you this was in an office that had 9-12 cubicles. They were raising awareness and looking for volunteers to help mentor school age kids.

She later came up to me and appoligized and said she had scottish blood and hoped I wasn't offended. "Of course not." I replied.

So we left the drinks and hors deourves, and went on a stroll thru the city. It was First Friday, an evening where all the local artist's open their doors to the public. It has gotten so popular that the artist's can't afford the housing and are slowly moving away from the now popular area.

Anyway, back to the story... I was walking down the street past an open air resturant, one guy (grey hair, jacket) leans back out over the railing and says he has a $5 bet with the girl across from him, concerning what I wear under the kilt and he wants to know. Well, if it was the girl asking, my response might have been different. I responded "Why would you care?"

Got a lot of complements from the women walking around "Nice kilt". My response was "Thank you". Of course, my wife was with me the whole time.

Any other witty responses to complements?

I wouldn't use wit to respond to a compliment. A 'thank you' is just fine, and anything else may come across as hostile.

Amen brother - if someone is nice enough to hand you a compliment - a simple thank you is the perfect reply.

I've had someone ask me the underwear question, and I'm quite honest about it. I like wearing ginch (briefs). If they wanna know, I just tell them, so long as they are being polite. And when you get complimented, respond with a thank you.

You are in fact an ambassador of the kilted people of Earth.

I think you handled the skirt comment well. I've done the same. I have also said "yep, I like my man skirt." I usually get a laugh from folks when saying that.

    Cheers dude!

I think if someone wants to bet what I am wearing, I would want a cut of it too! So you should have raised the stakes and said, "I will tell you the answer, but it will cost you $25 to either win or lose your bet." ha ha

    DALE.

You don't have to be Scottish to be comfortable!

Along those same lines, last Friday night when I was out at my favorite pub, I was chatting with several people around me seated at the bar. The lady next to me said there was a "rule" that if you ask a Scot what he's wearing under his kilt he's obliged to show you, but he is also allowed to ask you the same question and you're obliged to show him.

It's an interesting way to work it; not that I'd ever heard that "rule" or would abide by it. I have such a terrible time with rules.

Oh yeah. I like that. I wish I had thought of that at the time.

Tell her only if they are private showings and of course ladies go first...gallantry and all that being required of a gentleman.

I had a guy walk up to me today and tell me "I know you not wearing a kilt,....so what is it?" I was wearing my black UK original.

I told him some history, and that I was in fact wearing a kilt. He said he thought kilts were colored different, I told him the first ones were solid color. I guess he had seen me around town and finally worked up the courage to say something. Good on him, now he knows some more.
