New Sgian Dubh (and Don't) from Panache

Our own Panache has many talents, among them the making of Sgians Dubh. I'm now the lucky owner of one of his latest efforts, which arrived today!

    Here is a pic:

We agreed to a trade, a sporran from me for one of his knives. Outstanding workmanship. Feels great in the hand. I believe it will be my Sgian of choice for casual situations.

In addition to the knife, he added a the Sgian Don't for situations where carrying the blade might not be wise. The bottle opener is the perfect solution.

Many thanks Jamie for these beautiful items.
There are so many talented people on this forum.

BTW, the tartan is my 8 yard wool kilt from scottishkilts.net in the Old Lang Syne Grey tartan. A favorite of mine. Goes great with black sweater or black argyle jacket.

    Beautiful work!

Jamie, if you don't mind my asking, how did you color and finish the antler? Such a striking color.

He does, indeed. And to have these beautiful pieces from him will make you the envy in any gathering.

    Tom,

If you like them even half as much as I like my boar sporran I am well pleased. I hope you will show off the sheath you had in mind for the blade when you complete it.

The sgian don't is made from the same piece of antler as the sgian dubh. It was a very bleached and weathered piece. I just polished it up for the bottle opener. The wood for the bolster and cap is Austrailian lacewood finished in Tung oil.

For the knife handle I used a bit of Sedona Red 222 Minwax wood stain. The old antler seem to take it up quite well. After letting it dry for several days I then very lightly and carefully sanded and buffed the little projections to wear off the stain at the tips of the little points to give a feeling of the antler being worn a bit.

Both items were finished up with a polish of carnuba wax.

    Cheers

    Jamie

I don' thave a big sgian dubh collection, but I DO have a nifty Panache don't, and it's the only "sock accessorY' I ever wear.

    BTW, what tartan is that?

The list of talented sgian makers is growing--add Panache to the list! Impressive pieces, both.
