Tartan Availability in poly/visc??
I've been reading back on the threads, and haven't seen this exact question, nor, any hints at it's answer: Are there any suppliers, "out there", who have a wide variety of tartans in the economy poly/viscose kilts??
I'm trying to find a hunting Buchanan, and can't afford the $300.00-plus range (325-600) where most Scotish Polys lie........ I have been able to find a very limited list of suppliers in the U.S. for the Buchanan Modern, and many of the generic tartans, but the family weaves elude me!
Help????

Marton Mills has the Buchanan Tartan in the Ancient version on their stock fabrics list.
The problem with trying to find a specific Tartan or variety of a Tartan is that there are very few weavers who offer Tartan in P/V.
We just had a discussion on this subject last week. The end result is that if you want high quality Poly/Viscous Fabric in Tartan suitable for kilts you have only Marton Mills. Other weavers do have P/V fabric but it is usually very light weight and suitable for ties, scarves etc. and not for kilts.
Please be aware that the web is full of ads that say they have heavy weight P/V. They also claim to have authorized Tartans. These claims are usually found to be less than reliable.
Anyone who claims to have P/V in weights higher than 12 oz are probably confused.

Seriously, you had just as well see if you can get it in a 13 oz wool and save up to make the difference in price (which may be $100-200 more than that $300,depending). You'll just have to bear the frustration of looking and waiting for something that's never going to show up otherwise. I've seen Rocky organize a special run of PV tartan but there had to be something like twenty guys making a cash money commitment to make it feasible. If you have nineteen relatives who want to toss in with you, maybe you can get it going.

For "universal tartans" and ones that are highly requested (like the MacGregor tartan), we have the 20 person minimum. For something like the Buchanan Hntg, we'd need a minimum of 30 people (since it's not that common a tartan and there is already a Buchanan in our range).

Thanks for the information!
I now know what to avoid, but I am still not clear on how or where to purchase P/V.
The Marton Mills web site does not appear to be set up for retail sale.
- Is there an online list of what Marton Mills makes in P/V?
- If one just so happened to want 3-5 yards of Buchanan Ancient in P/V, how would one go about it?

Marton Mills Poly/Viscous is their Balmoral line. It can be found on their website under the schoolwear tab.
Or follow this link;

You can purchase direct but the best way is to contact either Rocky at USA Kilts, Pete at Canadian Casual Kilts or me at Freedom Kilts.
We all have commercial accounts with them and order regularly. This should save you the hassle of shipping, customs and duty.
Rocky probably has it in stock.
