That is a rather large plaid. I have seen most plaids in 54x54.

If you're not a piper, what are you wearing it with? I'm not being snooty, I'm curious.

Actually I will be wearing it with my Kilt, & a shirt for casual wear & reenacting..The "flys" are too dressy IMHO.

They look great, but they're not a whole lot of fun to wear. They're pretty complicated to put on too. First, you hang it over your left shoulder, then take the back and wrap it around your chest (under your right armpit) twice. Then, take the front part and throw it over your shoulder and pit it up. If you can't breathe or move, then you've done it right!

Fly plaids are typically anywhere from 36" x 36" to 54" x 54". A piper's plaid is generally along the order of 3.5 yards x 54" (or whatever the width of the fabric is), with the plaid heavily pleated along the width.

    Fly Plaid:

    Piper's Plaid:

However, based on Puffer's description of it as 4' x 8', and statement that it is to be worn casually or for reenacting, I think what we have here is neither a fly plaid or a piper's plaid, but an older style sometimes called a Laird's plaid or simply a shoulder plaid.

    Here are some examples:

Thank you Matt. I've always liked the look of those Laird Plaides.

Here's a photo I took at the 2006 Taste of Scotland with Bob Martin wearing one of those. (BM on the left) The other fellow was the chief of the ceremonies and I believe a Barron. I don't remember exactly.

He's also wearing Cadadh (hard to see, was my old 1.3mp camera)with a modern box-pleat. I think he pulls it off great. I'm pretty sure the cadadh he's wearing is Gunn tartan. If my memory serves me well..
