Carving deer antler
Any tips? I like to use it-antler- as a closure for our heavy cloaks, and, for the sporrans I'm making, but want to "jazz" it up a little with some carving. So...anyone who's done this and have helpful hints-they'd be very much appreciated.

Hi again,
I made a few sgian dubhs, antler pins and a closure for my sporran over the last few months. The best piece of advice I can give, is to wear a protective mask and goggles. Antler gives off a very fine dust that you really don't want to inhale. I try to work outside where it is well ventilated.
The search feature will bring up a few good threads that might be helpful too.
I can't wait to see what you come up with, I am sure it will be cool!

I use a dremel at the high speed, wear a mask and safety glasses, and go slow - really slow!!!
Stop frequently and completely check your work, re-mark the design and again, go slow!!!

Thanks for the advice. i'll give it a go, and, try not to give in to my impatient nature.

I like to sand by hand, file, and dremel. Ditto on the protection, and wear some old clothes you don't have to bring inside right away; antler dust stinks, and the wife might not appreciate it!

Oooooooo I forgot all about that... Super dittos. It really does stink, and you sort of get immune to it as you are working and forget the smell.

It certainly does smell! i took my whole work bench outside...along with my flexshaft and tools. I did find that keeping the bit of antler wet helps keep down the stink and the dust. I think my biggest problem is trying to get one idea done before trying out all the other ones I thought up while working on the original! LOL.
