Vegan Kilt Belts
So I've been trying to find a good non-leather kilt belt option, and have seen various discussions of some options, but I really wasn't seeing what I wanted. I'm almost ready to try making my own (with some vinyl/naugahyde I have), but in a recent bout of searching, I found some interesting things. I think some of these ideas have been mentioned, so my apologies for any redundancy...
So I was focusing on 2.25" wide, non-leather. Some of these, I think, could be modified to work like a standard kilt belt, but sewing throught the material may or may not be an option, depending on your sewing machine.
These first two look like they'd be the best match -- formal, very attractive, etc. But they're also the most expensive:

http://www.copsplus.com/prodnum1520.php ($44)
Some have mentioned these before -- these are much more economical, and maybe you could dye them to get black or other darker colors that de-accent the eyelets. I also thing this material would be easier to mod to accept a standard kilt buckle:

I found this on EBay, and it's expensive, but interesting because it LOOKS like it would be very easy to swap in a standard kilt buckle on it, and a hoop on the other side:

($34)
This says it's only 2" wide, but are economical, and look nice:

But this one looks the same, but says the "outer" belt is 2.25" wide, and has a second, inner belt
http://www.majorsurplus.com/Duty-Bel...38-P13817.aspx ($13)
For the price, might not be a bad option to try out.
And finally this one, has the construction of a military pistol belt, but fewer eyelets, and again might be the easiest to mod, and possibly dye.
http://www.hardwareandtools.com/invt/0180497?ref=gbase ($7)
So after all that, I think I'm gonna try my DIY one first, and if that fails, I'll probably start with that one from "hardware and tools" or the one from major surplus n survival, and see how they go. If I get to any of this in the near future, I'll be sure to post my experiences.
cheers all!
Jeff

Nothing to add really, but I want to say that the kilt wearing lifestyle is definitely not vegan friendly in the broad scheme of things. The fact that traditional kilts are made out of wool pretty much sets the standard. So, for all you vegans out there who want to wear kilts and kilt accessories I say more power to you. Good luck. You have your work cut out for you and I admire your determination. Please let the forum know of your successes so other vegans can bebefit from your knowledge.

Jeff,
I wear the outer and inner duty belt for work. The inner belt is nylon with fuzzy velcro on the outside, and worn through the belt loops on the trousers.
The outer belt holds all the grea - radio, flashlight, holster, ammo, tazer, etc. The hook velcro is on the inside and it velcros to the inner belt worn through the pants. I'm not sure how this would addapt to a kelt, but I doubt you want all that bare velcro snagging your good kelt.
My advice would be to go to a climbing shop, purchase what ever length of heavy web nylon that you need, and add a buckle.

Check out these guys on their military surplus page:
http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/b...aspx?c=2&dc=74
For day wear, a plain web belt in the OD or khaki or whatever would look fine, especially with a khaki shirt. For evening you could just get a nice buckle and put it on a dark colored web belt or, as you say, dye one a dark color.
The great thing about the military belts is that they last forever.
Keep us posted with photos.

A valid point. I'll add that I'm not a vegan (I'm somewhere in the ballpark), but I have found that when searching for particular clothing items, the search term 'vegan' is much more successful than any other (e.g. 'vegetarian') since the belts THEMSELVES are usually vegan friendly; or shoes, etc. "Non-leather" isn't even as effective, but works.

Jeff, I don't know if you've seen this, but even if you have I'll put it for others who would be searching. I have a wallet made by "VeganWares" - I believe it's out of Australia. It looks like real leather, feels like real leather, and has outlasted any real leather item I've had. The company sells their material. We got some scrap samples for my fiancee's jewelry business to replace real leather straps, and I can say it's high quality stuff. http://www.veganwares.com/microfibre.htm It's pricey, but I haven't searched real leather sheets to compare.

That's fantastic -- I hadn't seen that before! And I don't think it's too bad -- they say $200AUS per meter off the roll -- but their minimum is just 10cm -- so I think they're saying you could get a 10cm cut for $20AUS, and that's almost wide enough for 2 belts (at, what 5.8cm for a 2.25" width). And that 1.45M length should be enough for a good sized belt -- that's, what, 57inches in length? If that's the case, that's roughly 20-some-odd bucks for two belts-worth of material...which is incredible!
Do you know which types you got samples of? Looks like they have several varieties.
Cool stuff -- thanks for the suggestion!!

The only problem i see with this is the thickness...only at .1 inches, so you'd have to double it to make it thick enough.
It's not a sample of this specific vendor, but its made from 'vegan leather' in brown, not bad at all, and for the price?
can't beat it
