    Kilts for Halloween?

Here's a question I have for everyone that may prove somewhat controversial (though I certainly don't mean it that way):

How do you feel about wearing the kilt on Halloween, either to a party or pub or costume party or wherever for the festivities?

I feel somewhat torn about this.

On one hand, I love to wear my kilt whenever I possibly can. Halloween night seems to be a great night to wear it, mostly because it wouldn't seem out of place -- though most people who know me wouldn't think anything of me wearing it any other day either. So wearing it would not really be for the sake of avoiding attention -- if that makes any sense at all.

On the other hand, I definitely don't consider the kilt a "costume." Therefore, I think I'd feel like a poser for wearing it on Halloween.

Am I just over thinking this whole issue?

Here is a very simple question for you, that only you can answer.

    Is the kilt a costume?

It also looks like this was covered a ways back:

I think you're right Panache - like I said, to me the kilt is not a costume. It's a garment. Maybe I am over thinking this.

I'll be wearing mine during trick or treat, and perhaps even at the mall for the mall's trick or treat. then again, perhaps not, since mine is a all black one, at night....

I still hope to find a way to nab a second kilt at the ren fest, overly priced, yes, but I can make sure it fits then and there...

Though I would rather have a SWK, and could still get it in time, I don't have the $$ yet, and maybe not even this weekend, depending on the paycheck friday.

Last year I wore my belted plaid, etc. and went to a halloween party as the ghost of a slain highlander from the battle of Culloden. It got rave reviews. I wouldn't ever wear my modern kilts as a costume because they aren't a costume and I don't want to portray them as such.

    Unhappy Halloween kilt

Dropping by a Halloween store this evening to scout pumpkin-carving kits, Wife spotted a Highland costume. Oh, it was BAD.
Bonnet, shirt, whisky holder sporran and kilt skirt. Yes, kilt skirt. It looked like my fears of a Wal-Mart kilt outfit.
    I guess I felt rueful.

Personally, I would never wear a kilt to a Halloween party or any costume event. I wear a kilt to show pride in my Scottish ancestry and heritage. I feel that wearing a kilt as a costume does not communicate this.

So I should wear pants on Halloween? Heck no. That's the only question that matters to me.

How about historic "costume," as Jay suggests? This is how I would wear a kilt on Halloween:
