A Market for Pipers - Piping on the Golf Course

Check my post under Kilts in the Media about the new Scottish Golf Experience at Kierland Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ

A piper plays at sunset to signal the end of play for the day.

I've tried many times over the years to so do, but to little avail.

They're more interested in hiring as needed for tournaments that start at zero-dark-thirty. Of those, I've piped many.

And I always forget to remove my shoes upon returning home, leaving a trail of cut grass behind me on the carpet.

    Slainte yall,
    steve

Around here, piper-in-residence of a golf club is really competitive. It's not a full-time job by any means, but they call you up for every gig. That's a lot of work, with lots of rich guys listening to you perform.

But the key here is, are there a lot of rich guys tipping you?

    My experience.... none.

Then again, almost without exceptions, the course manager hires me to pipe 20-60 minutes prior to the shotgun start. The golfers are either signing in, loading their golfcarts, or getting in some last moment practice on the links.

Oddly enough, they ain't interested in walking over and stuffing my tip jar. They do wave enthusiastically as they drive by in their golfcarts though.

    Slan yall,
    steve

Here's a link http://www.mycentraljersey.com/apps/...CRIME/80808014 to a funny and disturbing incident on a golf course. Some people just can't take the pipes.

I thought about this the other day -- hiring my son and myself out to play at golf tournaments around town. I asked my brother who organizes three or four tournaments during the year, and he thinks it's a great idea for adding a little atmosphere to the tournament.

Well, I know that not only does Piper-in-Residence get paid really well, but those rich guys come to you first for weddings and funerals. So not only is it great money, but great exposure too. I've applied for the position, but due to my lack of reliable transportation and fluxuating residence, I didn't get the job.

I guess I'll have to wait til I'm retired!
