Regimental Field Flashes?
Ok here is the story;
I like several others have decided to take advantage of WPGs sale on Regimental Kilt Reproductions [in this case Gordon] and I got the khaki hose and "Desert Rat" shirt [forgot the web belt but I can go back for that later].
Knowing I can wear it however I choose I am still interested in at least being aware of how it would be worn in the field [as opposed to dress/ parade] such as the historic trench or bar shots.
I just looked through the Vintage Photo thread [great idea Rex, I love it] and from the photos there all I could determine was that the flashes are NOT "usually" the Tartan but a solid.
Are these a basic unit color such as [hypothetical example] Red for Black Watch, Blue for Gordon, Green for Seaforth etc.?
Or would they be colored by specialty such as [hypothetical example] Red for Paratroopers, Green for Infantry, Blue for Armor etc.?

Mike Chappell's Scottish Units in the World Wars from Osprey Publishing has quite a bit of information on formation signs.
Are you wearing this as a reenactor/living historian?

"Are you wearing this as a reenactor/living historian? "
No, just curious/ want to know what is correct.
As a follow on I noticed that Nervous Jock in his response to the "regimental regulations" thread is wearing red flashes which I would guess is the current incarnation [and possibly historically correct for the Black Watch?].

My apologies; I misunderstood you.You are referring to hose flashes, and not regimental formation signs, which are worn on the sleeves of shirts.

I was always under the impression that the flashes were red, but then again, I am no military historian.

I can only think of Military Hose flashes being Red, particularly recently, although there are different designs. But I wouldn't be surprised if there were different colours historically

Seaforth are, and to my knowledge always were, solid red. It looks to me like using the same tartan as the kilt for the hose flashers is a relatively new thing (ie. last hundred years or so...)

To be sure, the vintage thread was not my idea, but I do enjoy hunting for- and posting the photos.

Rex.

Red it is then
Well it seems like the consensus is that at least in recent history they have been/ are Red for all of the Highland Regiments.
Thank you all for your insights and collective brain trust.
Now to find some nice red flashes to go with those khaki hose and that new kilt that is coming ith:
