I couldn't stand it...so I pulled the trigger
And ordered 2 yards of the Hall, modern tartan for a box pleat kilt.
It's been on my "to make" list for about two years. I can knock out this kilt, machine sewn in about 13-15 hours, and it's quality 16 ounce stuff, so this will go fast and look good.

I hope you post pics when all is said and done.

I thought you had a closed kilt window, your retirement moves further away.

This one has always been on the list. It' s just that I'm not terribly fond of the tartan, so I never wanted to spend the $$$. There's been talk around the clan on getting the tartan made up in a poly/wool blend, but two years later and there's no sign of action so I finally just decided to do it. Note that I opted for 2 yards and a box pleat rather than 4 yards and the full-on knife pleat. When the stuff is $66 a yard, every yard counts when you have my budget, and that goes double if you're not wild about the tartan.
I've wanted a kilt in the Capercaillie tartan, and I've been looking at the Kiltstore's prices on the fabric. It's currently going for $47 a yard, which I could stomach....until I noticed that was for single width. I'd need at least 6 yards to make a decent kilt out of that, and by the time I pay for shipping and import duties, that's gonna be significantly over $300,,JUST FOR THE FABRIC. Forget it. I'd love one but no way am I going to pay $325-$350 just for the material. so much for a Capercaillie kilt.
So, what's left?
Hall box pleat
Gray Stewart 6 yard knife pleat
Ancient MacNaughton 8 yard tank
I was going to make a tweed double-box pleat but I'm running out of motivation, much as I absolutely LOVE Lady Chrystals' work. It's time to start making something besides kilts... been there, done that, now. After I finish these I'll have made almost 30 kilts. When I started this I thought I'd make 4-5. sheeesh. This hobby is out of control, and honestly it's started to become a lot less fun. I feel "pressure" to complete promised kilts now, rather than pleasure in doing them. That means it's time to slow down or stop.
We'll see what I'm going to do when my 3 yards of X-Marks PV comes in. I might offer it for sale on the board, or offer to make a bespoke kilt for someone. Or heck, I might make it into a summer weight machine-sewn kilt for myself, I dunno.
so, only 4 more kilts to go...well, 5 if Piper Georges weaver gets the material done before summer..
Kilts I've made, in no particular order
caramel canvas knife pleat
wool, not worsted, MacNicol modern 7 yard (still got it)
4 X-kilt prototypes (two in beige canvas, two in dark blue cotton/poly twill)
2 X-kilts (One for Panache, one for me)
3 X-skirts
2 digicamo knife pleats for guys at work
black denim reverse kinguisse
black knife pleat with Clergy highlights for friend in Washington
Black Knights pseudo-dress tartan casual
Lindsay 6 yard knife pleat for me
Fraser and Kirkbright on-sale-forever gray tartan 6-yard knife pleat
one hot, screaming pink monsterkilt for one of our beloved moderators
one box pleat X-marks tartan kilt for TimC
one X-Marks tartan 13 ounce, 6 yard knife pleat for me
Royal Stewart 5 yard wool knife pleat for my cousin (unless he doesn't want it)
Dutch Mackay 8 yard knife pleat for Piper George (sadly destroyed in the fire)
California Tartan box-pleat
That's 24 kilts, and I think I'm forgetting one or two
