What standard kilt item to you just hate?

For me? Black hose. I hate 'em...never wear them. I gave away my last pair to a mate who just wears Utilikilts.. Now I have another pair from Hamilton Dry Goods.

Well, I'll wear 'em scrunched down over boots, but pulled up? blecch. Black socks make my knees stand out, and I have chubby-looking knees. Or so I'm told.

I also often wear a kilt without a kilt pin...like today, for example. I've got on my X-marks tartan 6-yard and no kilt pin. It's not that I hate kilt pins, it's just that I don't feel the need with a heavier weight kilt, sometimes.

    How about you?

Sporrans. They look great, but when I'm driving or working at a dsk, they get in the way. I have a leather belt pouch from Native Earth that I use instead. It attaches directly to my belt and stays out of the way.

Yeah, I have to agree about the sporran. Sitting at a desk or something one could just swing it around to the side maybe. But there's just no place to move it to when driving.

Agree 100%. Especially when driving--between the steering wheel and seat belt--there is a lot of "adjusting" to do.

Well I just got my new sporran from Turpin and I could not resist wearing it today as a "fanny pack". I love it, everything is right there handy and getting money out for the drive through is so much easier than digging in my pants pockets. So the sporran may be my favorite item, I'll let you know what my least favorite is after a few months.

I love the sporran, same reason as runewolf. I like having my wallet and phone "in my lap" instead of under my butt or in my hip pocket. Easier to dig for.

Standard kilt Item I hate... tough call. I can't stand white hose. And I love the look on other people, but I don't think I'd ever wear a jabot and matching cuffs. We'll call it that one.

"Hate" is an awfully strong word, but there are a couple of items that I could never see myself wearing:

    1) Any bonnet w. a "toorie" (not that I'm much of a hat person anyway)

    2) Lace jabot and cuffs (I'm with chasem 100% on this one)

    ... just not my style.

Sporrans are great as long as they're large enough to be functional.

I do like the look of a good fur dress (or full mask) sporran, as much as I have moral qualms about them. (Full disclosure: I do own a beautiful muskrat fur dress sporran that I bought several years ago, but I do have mixed feelings when I wear it.)

Oh yeah... one other thing: Overly ornate kilt belt buckles. They're fine when they're appropriate to the level of dress, but for everyday I say the simpler the better.

    I don't hate anything.

I'm not a fan of the period looking stuff. The chieftain vests, the moccasins, belt pouches and such are just not my style. I always thinking it's a bit over the top to try and replicate the 1700's with 2000's replica gear.

I find the fly plaids to be over kill.

I also don't dig the hats too much, but I rarely wear a hat anyway.

I love having a sporran. You just have to make sure that it a) fits right and b) is worn were it should be.

Of course what works for me won't work for everyone else. Being unique is way more fun than being the same anyway.

I really dislike the kilt hose that are so common these days, the ones that cost $15, and are just a bit thicker than contemporary dress socks. I found one company that makes "off the rack" kilt hose that were thick enough to my liking, and bought a few pairs. Other than that, I hate thin kilt hose.

But I agree with Tim Little, "hate" is too strong a word. I 'dislike' thin kilt hose.
