Strap dilemma
Just today the post delivered my latest ebay find: a used wool kilt with a very weird strapping mechanism. It has a belt like strap, that is attached to the underneath apron, fed through a hole at the left side and going around the back.

When I tryed the kilt on, I discovered that the belt is too short for me.
Now, I see two ways of fixing this: Either I unfasten the belt buckle and make it longer, so the belt fits or I unfasten the whole belt and buckle and replace them with two regular traps. What do you think, which method would be better? And also, if someone recognizes the tartan, please tell me.

That is quite a kilt and I would leave it as is after reading the article from Matt.
I'm not sure about the name of the tartan but I do like it.
edit: I should define "as is"...keeping the current closure and adjusting it to fit if at all possible.

I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear

I believe what you have is called "regimental" strap. I have a contemporary kilt with this and it's quite comfortable, and unique. If it were me, I'd have someone put a buckle on a longer strap, and retain the rest. It's too cool to get rid of it and retrofit a 3 buckle setup. That'd be a shame....

Yep, after reading that article I must agree. I definitely want to keep the belt where it is. I think I'll try to either somehow extend the buckle strap or possibly replace the belt with a new, longer one.
My heart would just break if I couldn't get the kilt to fit me. It's such a beautiful tartan.

Nice kilt. I would also try to keep the fastening system. What tartan is it?

I have absolutely no idea. I'd love to know though.
Can anyone ID?

I don't know what the tartan is, and all I'm getting at work are the "red Xs", so I won't even hazard a guess.
Having made a kilt with a "regimental strap" (Hunting Stewart in the Gallery), my recommendation is leave the buckle as it is, replace the belt/strap with one that is long enough, and remove the hip strap and buckle. For the new strap, contact Cavscout at http://www.oconeeleatherworks.com/ - he should be able to whip something up for you if you don't want to make the belt yourself.

I can't find it. Are there really only two colors?
