Please Read….This May Save You Some Time and Money…..!
We are a small family business based just outside of Glasgow (Scotland). Our aim is to supply high quality, traditionally made kilts at affordable prices.
By keeping our overheads low, limiting the number of tartans available and working to a set of standard sizes, we are able to supply a range of quality kilts which are virtually indistinguishable from a made to measure product…..but at a fraction of the cost. Assuming you waist line permits, our kilts will last many years with minimal care ….!
As you will see from your search, most of the kilts listed here, are described as “5 yard, Lightweight, Casual, Rugby or Sports Kilts”, they sell from £1.99 to £49.99 depending on the day of the week. Some sellers offer a range of sizes, others claim their products are made to measure after you place your order, however, in my experience these products are cheap imports from India and Pakistan. Try to find a 5 yard kilt made by a traditional Scottish kilt maker….you will find that it will either be a ladies tartan skirt or a Childs kilt…..there is no such thing as a “Gents 5 yard casual kilt”….it’s a marketing myth. These imported kilts are generally made from approximately 5 yards of lightweight (8oz) mixed fibre fabric. They are loosely stitched, badly designed and the self selvaged edge at the base of this kilt is often rough and uneven. They may look okay in a photograph or when delivered, however after 10 minutes of wearing they are only fit for one thing…..and I think the dog deserves better….!
A well made traditional kilt will make you smile every time you wear it. “Scot or not” with every step you take you will feel comfortable and proud as you swing 8 yards of carefully pleated fabric. The aprons and kick pleat will be professional constructed so that no matter how energetically you jig your modesty will be maintained.
My advice to you as a potential kilt buyer is if you cannot afford that little extra to purchase a quality kilt, please do not settle for a cheap alternative….go to a hire shop and spend your money on something you will enjoy…..at least once.
Whatever your decision, I hope you enjoy wearing the kilt you select and thanks for keeping a wonderful tradition alive….!
All the Best,
Fraser. (Please check my feedback if you are in any doubt about the quality of my kilts).

The only thing I find shady is the fact that some of the larger sizes are not offered in all tartans. Seems fishy. If they make all of them and have the tartans in stock, they should be able to make all sizes.

It says you can contact them for custom sizes if you don't see your size listed.

Umm.... this sent up major red flags. While I agree that the poor quality kilts they go on to describe probably reflects the majority of what you see on Ebay, this does not mean that Scottish kiltmakers don't actually offer quality low-yardage or casual kilt. Well established and respected firms from Lochcarron to House of Edgar to Hector Russel to Kinloch Anderson all make some form of a low yardage casual kilt.
I am always suspect of those who think the best way to sell their product is by disparaging other products.
I'm also suspect of an "8 yard 16oz hand sewn kilt" for only $150.

If this is Fraser Borland (and the description of "We are a small family business based just outside of Glasgow (Scotland)" sounds as if it is,) this is the purveyor of one of the worst kilts I have ever bought. The selvedge was uneven. The weight was lighter than represented. It was said to be 8 yards of material, but my tape measure showed less than six. The cloth was represented to be 100% wool, but a well-known quality kiltmaker who frequents this board declared it wasn't, after having examined it.
Watch out.

It certainly looks like Fraser Borland now trading under a different Ebay name.
I got my Scotland National kilt from him some time ago and whereas it's not too bad a kilt for the price the selvedge is indeed slightly uneven and there are better sources in a similar price range IMHO.
I only wear it occasionally but then I have several other kilts to choose from.

Agreed, although I think that such a product could be made for that price ... in Pakistan, not Scotland.
ETA: The closest thing to a 'tank' that I myself own was made in Pakistan, made to measure, about 8 yards of fabric, with three buckles and leather straps, lined, and much less than that price, but not 100% wool and not hand sewn. I see from the ad that the fabric is woolen twill (not wool worsted), although I'm not an expert on different weaves of wool. If this is off the peg but hand sewn, then $150 would certainly be easily believable for Sialkot, made to that spec as advertised, rather than Glasgow. They say hand made, not hand sewn (hand made on a sewing machine, perhaps?). In addition, they only claim to be suppliers, not makers. The latter implies they may be importers, even though they themselves disparage imported kilts (for having uneven selvage!).

Thanks for the input everyone. If it seems too good to be true then it usually is.

Timely post. I just saw the listings myself. I too was put off by his putting down 5 yard kilts as inferior, and thought his prices were just too good to be true. Glad I saw some feedback here.

Indeed. Red flags. Quality is usually worth the price..
You know, all that stuff that our grandmothers used to (or still do) tell us.
