Wearing the kilt without a sporran
Hey everyone, I just have a quick question i couldn't find the answer for using the search function of older threads - Beyond practical reasons is it somewhat off to wear a tartan kilt without a sporran.
I recently got my first kilt fixed and havent had time to order any accessories, and now I'd like to wear my kilt to a Real Mackenzies Show.
I'd like your opinions wherther i should just wear it sans sporran or are they really an inseparable couple
Thanks much - oops now im late for work!

Hawk,
The Sporran is useful in that there is nowhere else to store your stuff and it also keeps the appron down. Might I suggest Jerry @ Stillwater good stuff, great prices, and supersonic shipping.

Personally I think they look much less kilty without a sporran. To my eye, a sporran-less kilt looks too much like just a plain skirt; I guess it's part of what immediately and visually separates the two garments. I'm no expert, mind you, just my opinion
That being said, I think most people with utilikilt-type contemporaries wouldn't wear a sporran. I suppose those look fine, so perhaps it depends on what style of kilt you'll be sporting to the show.
In any case, isn't it about what you want? Wear it nonetheless... who's going to care if you look a little off? I'm sure the band won't mind if you're having a grand ol' time!

To add to TKR's thoughts, the sporran also helps break up a vast field of tartan. But it has been infinitely useful to me at times to keep that apron down. So I am sure the Real MacKenzies won't be offended if you have no sporran, but there are really practical reasons to wear one. Plus, it helps differentiate "kilt" from "skirt".

While you can wear your kilt without a sporran, I never do it, and there are reasons why I don't, first, I need somewhere to put my keys, wallet etc. Second, when you sit a sporran will push down the aprons in the front, thus saving your modesty. Third, and again this is my thoughts on it, but without a sporran it looks too much like a skirt to me.

Check out my gallery....I often wear kilts without a sporran on purpose...vests or jean jackets or bomber jackets serve in lieu of sporrans.
Ham's postings about wearing a kilt without a sporran got me started and I love it. Check his photo gallery.
Then I saw this ad which reinforced that it's not weird to wear a kilt without a sporran.
Anyone wanna tell this guy he looks like he's wearing a skirt?
I like that more tartan shows to the front.
Hiking, or walking the mall, I like that the sporran doesn't beat me to death.
Mostly the convenience of not haveing to maneuver into a sporran, rummage around, and reclose the thing.
Ain't no big difference between a kilt with a sporran and a kilt without a sporran - the kilt rules as a kilt.
With a sporran on a hot day.
Same kilt on a cooler day with a vest in lieu of a sporran. Does the kilt suddenly look like a skirt? I think not.
And, I've given up wearing a kilt belt....the straps work fine.
This is just what I prefer. And if its okay with Ham its okay with me.
Feel free to kilt up sporranless.
Ron

A sporran isn't totally necessary and there are people who don't or rarely wear one but I always do in public - it looks better and the reasons have already been covered by McMurdo. Round the house is a different matter though.

If you don't have a sporran yet, just figure out a way to carry your stuff -- but in any case, if you want to wear your tartan-kilt, wear it, even if sans-sporran!

Take a look at these threads for kilts with and without sporrans:
http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/1...946/index.html

As you can se most people wear sporran with there tartan kilt.
When doing athletics in the kilt, I prefere to go kilted without sporran.

I often wear a waist pack (fanny pack) for causal wear. I save the sporran for when I want to dress up a little, like going out to dinner.
