    Horn buttons instead of silver?

In a thread above, reference is made to "horn buttons instead of silver" on an Argyle jacket. I searched the net but did not find any pics of horn buttons on an Argyle.

Does anyone have any close-ups of horn buttons? Are they interchangeable with silver buttons?

Horn buttons are just flat pieces of polished horn. They are most often used for a less formal appearance (day wear). I would say they are interchangable but not easily as they are sewn on. If you plan on wearing an argylle for day wear only, you could change the silver buttons to horn or better yet, have two jackets!

Horn buttons are usually used on tweed jackets, whereas silver buttons are on the all black Barathea wool jackets.

Did you see the thread "1 kilt 10 looks" under General Kilt Talk? Check out Glen's daywear jackets in outfits #5 and #6: those are horn buttons. Probably #4 too, but you can't really see the buttons.

And I put "horn" buttons on my latest jacket conversion. I just picked up a set of regular old plastic buttons with a brown and black swirl pattern and sewed them on upside down. That way they look like a simple horn button rather than a typical cast plastic button. A very economical alternative, but I still paid more for the buttons than I did for the thrift-store jacket!

Here are some close ups for you

    Imitation Horn Buttons

You will find these on most day wear jackets these days

    Horn Buttons

These are on my Harris Tweed I estimate this jacket to be about 50 years old

    Wood Buttons

This is a close up of my Burns Check with wood buttons again I'd say 40 -50 years old for this jacket

Another thing I'd like to note is that with the imitation buttons I've had to sew them back to make sure they stay on, I've never had to resew any of my older jackets. The Horn or Wood or even leather covered buttons are seen on day wear jackets whereas the silver buttons are usually seen on more formal jackets, the PC, or the doublets come to mind.

Thanks Fluter for bringing up the 10 Looks thread this is exactly why we posted it.

Just a bit of trivia here. 50 or so years ago, buttons were always sewn on by hand. I remember watching the tailor just down the street do that. Today they are machine sewn, and of course the thread is NOT tied and knotted off. Hence the reason they will always need resewing.

Here are the silver buttons from my Montrose and my PC

    Silver Button

Again this is an older jacket, and the buttons are silver

    Chrome Button

This one is on my Prince Charlie, you will note the button is chrome and the detail is lacking that of the silver button above.

    Bump...

Anyone have any good links for the purchase of horn or imitation horn buttons? My searches keep coming up with Indian/Chinese wholesalers....
