Hear hear the piper's calling, why why..!

At school every boy had to learn to play the bagpipes, I was 9 years old.
I like most Scottish tunes, my fav must be Highland Cathedral.
When did you take up the pipes and why, what is your fav tunes or what tune do you dislike.
    Looking forward to your thoughts.

I was looking for the library right after I moved to Ohio, and I found the Celtic Corner instead. I stopped in and started asking questions about bagpipes. I came back later that day and bought a practice chanter.

For me it was when my Highscool did the play Brigadoon. They brought in a good piper to be a part of the play, and when he fired the pipes up I said to my friends I got to get be some pipes. 6 years later I started and 25 years after that I am still playing. There is not a pipe tune played well that I don't like, But Scottland the Brave is my fav.

    :ootd:

    Yes timing is somewhat critical!

I have a practice chanter but have yet to try the actual pipes.

I started when I was 50 (four years ago). I'd always loved the pipes, but had spent my life thinking that I'd never get around to starting. Then, my brother (RobbyMc) and I encouraged each other to start taking lessons. We now take weekly lessons together and have joined a band.
I'm not so keen on Amazing Grace. I really love Scotland the Brave and The Black Bear/Caller Herrin.

I was ten when I first played the bagpipes.
My father pushed me into it.

I've always liked bagpipes. In fact, when I was younger I made a mix tape of bagpipes. My dad and uncle made fun of me saying "Shouldn't you be listening to whatever is on the radio? What kind of 12 year old makes a bagpipe mix tape?!?"

I went to Marquette University for my first year of college. Spring Break was right before St. Patrick's Day, so I dug around our basement and found a pipe chanter. I taught myself Amazing Grace in that one week of Spring Break. When I got back to school, I found out that a pipe band practiced only 5 blocks from where I was living. I went down to check it out and the rest is history.

Favorite pipe tune? Can I have a few? Raigmore, Dr. MacInne's Fancy, Steam Train to Mallaig.

My brother (Macman) and I started four years ago. One of his clients just happens to be a pipe major for the police band here in town so off we went. I have always loved the feeling of listening to a band play, the goosebumps I got when they struck up a tune.
My favourite tune changes each week. Right now I am partial to Lochanside and Bloody fields of Flanders. I would say that Auld House is my least favourite.

I've always liked the pipes but did not grow up in a musical family. I remember when I came home from school in 4th grade and told my parents (Mom & Step-dad) I wanted to play an instrument they actually laughed at the idea. My younger brother on the other hand played the trumpet and bass guitar. I guess I loosened them up for him. Anyways, my father started taking violin lessons when he turned 60 and that made me think that if he can learn violin at 60, there is no reason I cannot learn the pipes. We vacationed in Prince Edward Island Canada last Fall and while there I visited the College of Piping and had the opportunity to meet Matt MacLaine, the College's head Pipe Instructor. I picked up a tutor and a practice chanter from the College Book Store while I was there and managed to find an instructor right in my small town. I am still on the practice chanter and still working on my first tunes. I don't practice nearly as much as I should. but I have lessons every 2 weeks and try to practice as much as I can in between. It gets tough with work, 2 small children and other obligations to find the time, but it is so worth it.

Favorite tune is probably Highland Cathedral.
