    White Dinner Jacket?

Is it outrageous to try and pair a specialized white dinner jacket and bow tie with formal kilt attire? It's a little sportier than the "yay black" traditional formal affair.

Sounds interesting. I've certainly never seen it and I have no idea if there's any precedent for it but I bet it could look very cool paired with just the right sporran and hose.

Here in the South, the white dinner jacket (or tux) is (or was) often seen during the summer months. If you are going to wear it with a Kilt, I would recommend going for the Military "mess jacket". I had one when I was in the Navy for super formal occasions (like embassy dinners), and I think it would look super with a kilt. Just be sure it is the proper length for use with a kilt. A formal sporran would be a must.

I want to see this, too. If you can't find a mess jacket, a white tux jacket conversion would look spiffy, I think. A skunk sporran with plenty of silver, colored hose, and ghillies or buckled brogues in their shiniest shade of black would really set off this kit, regardless of tartan. A black waistcoat and white shirt under this white jacket, along with a black bow tie would be a very handsome get-up. Please post pics of how it comes together.

Ok, another step further. Red waistcoast and bowtie? I'll have to do some serious shopping around to find the something I'm really happy with.

I think the white dinner jacket can look quite smart (see Humphrey Bogart for examples).

However I can't say that it would look nearly as smart with a kilt.

I believe there are military jackets for Highland regiments that were white or light tan but they would be a very different cut than a white dinner jacket

Personally I would stick to black

A white mess jacket with a kilt would probably be okay, provided it wasn't made from some sort of polyester fabric. I have a white duck mess jacket that I wear with trews; I've tried it with the kilt, but found that it just didn't look right. It is really a case of too much white above the kilt, which tends to destroy the balanced look achieved with a black evening jacket.

So, like Panache, I'd suggest sticking with black.

Tartanweb, back in the good old days of Wm. Mackintosh, offered a white Braemar doublet. The only pic I have is verrry small:

I figure if anyone might beat me to it, it's Sir Sean Connery (think Dr. No). I'll definitely make sure I kilt up for the shopping. A formal mistake can be an expensive one.

Actually, this looks better than my mess jacket, although I think I'd probably opt for black anyway, for strictly practical reasons:

    1) despite it's colour, the white jacket shown above probably isn't any less warm to wear than a black jacket.
    2) unless you live in Burma, you'd only wear your white jacket four months out of the year (May thru August) while you can wear the black jacket year round, which makes it far more versatile.
