On July 1, 1782, George III signed the Repeal of the Act Prescribing the Wearing of Highland Dress. Since August 1, 1746, it had been illegal to wear a kilt (except as part of a military regiment) or even own a piece of tartan. Violators were subject to imprisonment for six months for a first offense and transportation to a penal colony for up to seven years.

I don't normally wear my kilt to work, but I can definitely get away with it next Wednesday.
