Storage of a seal skin sporran
i`d like to know the best way to store my sealskin sporran
i currently still have it in its original plastic wrapper which is stored in a wooden carry case(old artists paint brush carry case) now do i chuck the plastic wrapper and store it in something cotton for example like a old pillow case or wrap it in a tea towel
or shall i just let it sit without any covering at all in the carry case im also pondering whether to line the case with either leather or suede im unsure of leather with it being able to sweat with heat
the wee case stores my cufflinks ,sgian dubh ,flashes silk tie/hanky and of course the sporran also the sporran chain and well im worried that these items might damage the sealskin or tug the seal hair
please note im in Scotland so any debate about sealskin being wrong can be left out please i merely wish to know how to store a item i wish to keep as mint as possible so i can keep it for life

I simply leave my Sealskin sporran in a drawer without any covering, I've not noticed a problem with this method, but I like the idea of putting it in a pillow case or something similar to protect it.

The old pillow case is preferable to plastic because it will allow the sporran to "breathe" and thus reduce the possibility of damage due to condensation. If you're concerned about potential damage while your sporran's in the box, you might want to divide it into a couple of wee compartments-- like an old time shotgun case. The best thing to line it with is a fabric called "baize". It's the stuff they cover billiard tables with, and you should be able to get enough to line your box from any place that sells or repairs billiard tables.

I keep my sporrans in the top drawer inside cotton shoe bags.

I've kept my seal skin sporran in a cardboard box in my closet for ten years (wearing it only when dressing up) and it looks just as good as when I purchased it.

I too keep my SS sporran in a cotton pillow case in a drawer with my other kilt accessories. I haven't noticed any problems with this method. But I'm always open to better ideas.

could it be feasible to keep something like that in a cedar box/trunk of the sort?... keeps the bugs out of it.... I keep certain items of Native American origins in cedar boxes, to keep them safe.. I am curious if this would work for the sporrans no matter what they are made from.

Doubt it would cause your sporran any harm... or you could just put cedar shavings in a drawer and that would probably be about as effective.

I agree ... anything you can do, to preserve the investment or sentimental value of a fur sporran, is always a good thing...
