Big Contemporary Kilt Event This Weekend in PA.

This weekend is the Philadelphia Folk Festival near Philadelphia, PA (and AmeriKilts and USAK home turf).

Hippie -- as much like the original Woodstock as anything else around.
On warm nights, there is a dedicated Security crew whose job it is to ask folks to put some clothing on.
This annual American roots and folk music festival began five years before the original Woodstock.

All outdoors. Estimated attendance 35,000 (!) over three days, including c. 6000 campers.
Stage music from 10:00 am until midnight, then dozens of parties with music jams in the campground until dawn.

Based on the last few years, there will be on display:

• One Traditional Kilt – on the solo piper who summons the folk to each night’s concert.
• A dozen UK’s, almost all in black.
• A dozen AmeriKilts, including me.
• A half-dozen SportKilts including their Hiking version on me.
• Me in my USAK Casuals or SWK Standards, at night depending on the weather. I'll be preaching on them.
• Me in my HoS lightweight PV solid bright red kilt. THAT draws attention even among the kilted.
• Newbies in “kilts to lend”. From me – it’s how I dispose of some of my "closet full of cheap kilts" as I sell a few.
• A few men in African robes or Polynesian wraps or actual (long) skirts, but let’s not speak of the latter.

All pleats in the back. The universal rule even among the ultra casual.
Footwear is sandals by day, boots by night.
Topwear is bare chest, t-shirts, polo shirts, Hawaiian shirts (subdued and not), and camp shirts. Decorated sweat shirts or flannel shirts by night.
Usually tucked in.
Sporrans and belts are rare, although centered waist packs are common.
Headwear is none to all manner of brimmed hats and caps. Non-brimmed rare.

As a proportion of the attendees that’s a tiny percentage, and if this isn’t a contemporary kilt conversion opportunity then nothing is.
Sigh. The magnitude of the task.
But at least the number is growing each year.
And even at that number comments are always friendly.

UK’s were the first to appear, then AmeriKilts vended there for two years.
