District Tartans?
Some tartans have a history of being used both as clan tartans and as district tartans. However, some may not.
My question is, for example, if a person had ancestors from the Cunningham(e) District of Ayrshire, could they wear a Cunningham tartan as a district tartan without suffering too much criticism?
Cheers, ColMac

Yes! There are also clan tartans with military connections - and district tartans as you say.
Campbells don't mind people wearing a Black Watch tartan!
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

My guess is that the only people who would criticize you might be tartan manufacturerers and kilts merchants who might complain if you didn't wear both that you weren't spending enough money on them.

Is the Cunningham tartan the same as the Ayrshire disrict tartan? If it is, then there is no criticism. Generally speaking, I would expect a clan tartan to take precedence over a district tartan if they are not the same. In truth, very few would even know what a Cunningham tartan, or, the Ayrshire district tartan was. I mean no offence, but I certainly don't!

I think you'll find this article on The Lordship & Barony of Kilmarnock's web site most helpful in answering your question, Colonel:
http://www.kilmarnock.com/tartan.html
Note that the Ayrshire District tartan and the Cunningham tartan are both listed, along with the Clan Boyd.
Yours aye,
Todd

Note that the Ayrshire tartan may be worn by anyone with connections to the districts of Cunningham, Kyle and Inverclyde.

I would guess that not many people would know that.
