    Question Tartan help...

I figured that for my 1000th post, I should make it a good one...

The thought for today is that I should try to work on getting a kilt to honor my dad who died about 6 years ago last month. And I got thinking, does Coke have a tartan? Turns out they do!

Now, for various reasons, I know I would need to order either via Rocky or Matt, and I think I remember Matt doing the more rare tartans. I have no question that it would be a custom weave, but... just how do I go about getting permission from Coca-cola? Never mind that I can drink a case of that in a mere day or two. I've emptied a 24pk by myself in a day more than once. My dad used to drink 2 liters for lunch. (I think it had something to do with them using sugar back then, I can't pull that off myself.)

If my dad would have had a tartan, Coke would have been it. I still miss the old Coke vending machine and other Coke stuff he had in his basement.

Again, the main issue is that it is a corporate tartan. I figure I'll need permission from somebody for the weaving process. Anybody have any experience with that extra step in the process?

I was doing a search on corporate tartans a few weeks ago and came up with this on the Coca Cola tartan, I had also discussed it with Matt by the way:

    STA ref: 7525
    STWR ref: none
    Designer: Not Specified
    Tartan date: Not Specified
Registration date: This tartan was recorded prior to the launch of The Scottish Register of Tartans.
    Category: Corporate

    Restrictions:

Registration notes: Apparently designed by Janet Helm Presents Tartan (a Vancouver design company) for Coca Cola for use in a promotion. Dangerously close to one of the Burberry tartans (3768). Count estimated from online photograph.

Now as this was done essentially for an advertising campaign I highly doubt that it has ever been woven. Not that it could not be woven however it has not been done, then there is the similarity to the Burberry tartan as mentioned in the Registration Notes.

Somehow that would seem to make it even more cool. I compared the one it said it was close to, and it is different enough to matter to me.

Would be interesting to do a large enouh run on for cheaper pricing, but I prob would need to settle on a 4yrd box.

Given the wide range of marketing strategies these days I think Coca-Cola would not only give you permission to wear the tartan, they may even sponsor you. It's all in how you approach them. Tell them you'll wear it to all the highland games and see what response you get.

No restrictions are listed and it doesn't state that it is copyrighted. Since it's not one that Coke USES ACTIVELY (in every add or as part of their trademark), it's more than likely OK. If anything Janet Helm probably would have more to say about it.
