5 Yard Kilt by John Morrison

I am looking at getting a beater kilt for my piping gigs in pubs and the like. I am stuck between a sport kilt or the 5 Yard Kilt by John Morrison I am open to any other kilt under or around $200 but I would like a modern McEwan tartan as I need his kilt most for use with my pipe band. I have a sport kilt so I know their style. Any pictures of the pleats on recommended kilts would be most helpfull. Thanks!

While John Morrison are owned by the dreaded Gold Bros, their Kilts are about 10003004924e92423702379409309832490 times better than Sortkilts. Get one of those.

I think you may be mistaken on the actual price of the 5 yd kilt from John Morrison, as the base price in $US in $196, but after you choose the MacEwan 13oz Lochcarron tartan it ends up being more like $300 plus.

If your price point is around $200 US or maybe a little more look into Scottishkilts.net 5yd Lochcarron which I believe includes MacEwan and runs only a smidge over $200, maybe $215 plus shipping. I have a couple of their 8 yd Jura machine sewn kilts and they fit well, are made well, look good. I would bet their 5 yd would be similar but with less yardage.

Scottishkilts.net doesn't have the MacEwan. I'm beat! Is their no kilts around $200 in the Modern MacEwan?!?! I have nice a few nice suites I wear four days a week that I paid $250 for and I can't find a kilt??? Can't just one mill sell inexpensive cloth with a big range of tartans? I am thinking of just saying screw it and just wear my nice kilt to the pubs and get it all wrecked up. And buy a new band kilt every few years

Cheapest I can find a Modern MacEwan in 5yd is $251US in 11oz wool from Scotweb:

    http://www.scotweb.co.uk/sr_swhdr_fi...chterm=macewan

Nothing on ebay, HoS, Tartanweb/Scottishkilts, or Burnetts-Struth.

AvanceHighland has their 5yd medium weight listed for $244US but does not list the available tartans to see if MacEwan Modern is included. You could always drop them a line. Although their price is slightly lower It would likely NOT include shipping which Scotweb usually does for basic ground shipping on an order of this value:

    http://www.avancehighland.com/?init=...d=412&scid=155

I doubt you could purchase the fabric for this much and have one of our artisans make it up for you for the prices these two places are offering, but you can always ask the kiltmakers at large in another thread. They can sometimes get tartan fabric cheaper and may be able to bring you in at a reasonable price. Unfortunatley MacEwan tartan is not that common among the weavers, and there is no PV or acryllic version out there that would be an inexpensive knockabout alternative.

If you are willing to tolerate the 5yd casual in MacEwan MUTED colors instead of MODERN in 13 oz batli wool you have a couple choices that would bring you in at just a little over $211 or so, either Scotweb or HeritageofScotland/JohnMorrison. In which case shipping costs, percieved quality, and turnaround time would probably be your determining factors. But this would likely NOT match your pipe band's uniform kilt tartan.

    Just another option to consider.

Had another potentially brilliant idea that will only cost you a phone call to check out. Burnetts-Struth sell their 4-6 yard casual kilt for around $200 CDN in a whole lot of different tartans, many by Lochcarron, who also happens to be the maker of your MacEwan Modern tartan in a couple different weights. Look up their website and give their customer service line a call to find out if they would be willing to make you a casual kilt in the MacEwan Modern from Lochcarron for the same price, or maybe even something close to that price. You might be surprised, as they are a very people oriented company. All they can do is say no, in which case you are only out the phone call (and it might be a 1-800 number anyway).

Otherwise keep your eyes on their casual kilt tartan listings over the next weeks/months as they are regularly adding more tartans and might add the MacEwan Modern at some point.

Thescottishweaver.com has 10-11oz wool double width for $60US per yard (you would likely need 2 yds DW split to make 4 yards for a casual kilt or a 4yd box pleat kilt):

    http://www.thescottishweaver.com/Med...ns/modern.html

That would put materials at probably $120-130, then you would have to find a kiltmaker willing to do the labor for whatever you two work out.

Rants are a dime a dozen around here. Probably the best place to get them out.

    Found another ebay option:
