bow tie?
Greetings,
I am a kilt-wearer and a bow tie-wearer. I am, however, having a hard time reconciling the two. I feel like a bow tie with a kilt looks too formal....or like a failed attempt to be formal. Add to that, bow ties tend to be highly patterned, which I suspect will not go with the plaid. Anyone pull off the kilt-and-bow-tie look care to suggest how to do it?

Many bow tie wearers on the forum so I'm sure you will get good feedback.
Here is a thread on making your own.

I'm not a massive fan of bow ties... especially without a waistcoat or with a low-cut waistcoat - as I feel you see too much of the shirt. I do, however, wear my kilt and bow-ties to formal occasions together. I'd rather wear a rouche if it was the right time and place too!
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

Ya, I think you need a high cut waistcoat or vest of some sort with a bow tie if you're wearing a Argyle type jacket. I wouldn't worry about the patterns or all of that going with the kilt.
This bow tie sounds nice.

Here's a side question, could one safely wear a bow tie with one of those sweater vests (no buttons up the front) and a jacket?

Don't fret over the small stuff. Wear whatever bow tie you want during the day. Wearing a bow tie with a kilt is no different than wearing one with a blazer, or a suit. The only caveat that I'd add would be to suggest that bow ties are probably best not worn after 6PM unless one is in formal attire; then the tie should be black or white depending on the occasion.

I've said it before, and I'll probably never stop: patterns and tartans can go together just fine if you vary the scale. There's probably not an attractive bow tie you could not wear with a kilt.

Rex.

Fear not the bow and the kilt - Rex offers some good advice about mixing and matching patterns, tweeds, tartans, and the like.
