Burns night wear
I know this is a bit early but i want to be sure I have what I need before it roles around. Right now I have socks, flashes kilt belt and sporran. For burns night would a nice Aran jumper be fine or do I need to find a jacket? either way was planning on wearing a button up with tie but was hoping that the Aran sweater would be ok for burns night.

It differs all over the country. At the Burns Supper I go to, a jacket is expected, but some are far more casual.

Check with the folks who organize the dinner. If they do require black tie, look into renting. If not, then a tie with a sweater would do. I wore a tie, shirt, and sweater vest to my first dinner.

A Burns Dinner is a bit dressier than going out to Appleby's with the gang, so if you can, try to acquire a kilt jacket-- either a day wear jacket or a black Argyll jacket will do nicely. if cost is a consideration you might think about renting, and if that's not an option then go with the sweater and tie.

I was in Maine one year on Burns' day- a little further up the coast from Bath. With the exception of wearing a tie for church, most of the men I saw that winter never got very dressed up. It may be different in Bath, or you may have a particularly dressy crowd of friends. I think a jumper would be acceptable if most of the men were in ties, but if most of the men were in BLACK tie, you'd probably at least want a jacket. I think asking the organizers would be wise. I wouldn't be surprised to see a scrapbook or a set of photos somewhere. Ask to see those. You can tell a lot by looking at last year's pics.

I just re-read your original post and noticed you said an Aran sweater. Is this a light colored sweater? I think most Arans are. Since this is an evening event, a darker colored sweater might fit the bill if you go the sweater route. Also if you wear the sweater, you don't necessarily have to wear the kilt belt. The sweater will likely cover it up anyways. Unless of course you use hangers to wear your sporran.

Also to be considered: Burns Suppers are fairly long affairs (2-3 hours); will you be comfortable in a sweater for that long?
As others have suggested: contact the organising committee and see what they say in terms of dress.

Most that I have been to have a web site and should have the dress requirements on the site. However I would advise you to buy or rent a jacket.

With the success of last year's Whisky 'n Plaid night, a Burns Night is being planned for Saturday, January 23. L/A Arts invites you to toast the Bard (Robert Burns, Scotland's National Poet) & celebrate in the time-honored customs of Scotland at a Traditional Burns Night & Ceilidh (Gaelic Social and Dance) on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Martindale Country Club, Auburn, Maine. Snowdate (’cause it’s Maine) Sunday, Jan. 24. Times and price still being worked out.
Tried to go to Martindales website but they don't have anything listed about this event yet. not sure who I would try and contact about dress requirments. I think I'll see about getting measured for a jacket and see if one of the ones listed in the sale section will fit the bill. I was also looking at the Eaton jacket on Uniformal but not sure if it would be too formal for most events.
