Unhappy No Kilt Wearing for Awhile

I was diagnosed with diabetes earlier this year and as part of my management I'm loosing weight. As a result, all of my kilts are now too big. I don't want to purchase another kilt until I get my weight down to my target and am able to maintain it.

I have also started a new job. Kilt wearing isn't allowed, and at this point I don't want to push the issue, but I am considering wearing tartan ties. Typical work attire is "Docker" type pants, shirt & tie or polo shirt. I prefer to wear the shirt and tie.

What does the rabble here think about wearing tartan ties in this environment?

Sorry to read about your health problems but it's good that you're taking action.

As for the tartan tie, why not?

Newly dealing with finger pokes here too. Good for you for losing the weight. You may think of recycling your larger kilts here and then get something that fits your new form for weekend etc wear.

As far as work--I'm with you here as well. I prefer a dress shirt and tie to the typical khaki and golf shirt uniform. I think tartan ties would look great and maybe scratch the tartan 'itch' you still have.

I wear nothing but "funny" ties at work. It's my rebel side making a statement. The tie is your expression, go for it!

As for the kilt, I to have type 2, diagnosed a year and a half ago. and have lost over 100 lbs with another 20-40 to go. I bought a Black Stewart Thrifty from Stillwater Kilts. Very cheap, and velcro so I can adjust the size as I go. It has served me well so I can wear something while changing sizes.

Now if I could just get at least another 20 lbs gone then I will be about a size 37" and after the last 20 lbs that puts me in the recommended weight range, I will end up a 36" I think. With just the 20, I think I can safely buy a size 36" and wear it although just a bit tight. More incentive to finish loosing the weight!

I'd also concur with tartan ties. In the past (unfortunately not recently) that extreme weight loss requires "interim" clothes - stuff that you only need for a short time while moving down in weight. Clothes at thrift shops saved me much money...

I'm all for tartan ties. The more the merrier!
You might be able to take your old kilts apart and make a blanket or plaid or lady's shawl out of them. It will probably be a whole lot of fun deciding which ones to replace the old ones with.

Here's some unsolicited health advice: if it's alright with your doctor, you might want to reduce the animal products (yeah, all the good stuff ) in your diet. I did it three years ago, and my blood sugar and other numbers are now where they're supposed to be.

Your description of typical attire there sounds just like my workplace. And I'm wearing a tartan tie today. With a matching tartan scarf!

When I lost around 40 pounds about three years ago, I was able to keep altering the straps (with electric sewing machine) until my kilts began to look all wrong (apron too far around). Then I bought a kilt at my target waist, and some extension straps, and kept tightening them until no longer needed. As for the tie, well, I always say "wear what you like!".
