My first bona fide disaster

So I'm making a machine stitched BP for my brother who bought his material back during the summer and has patiently been waiting in line. Everything was looking fantastic, until I cut the belt loop hole........ON THE WRONG SIDE!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe I did this......Its fixable, but it will certainly stand out once I'm done fixing it. Luckily he bought 4 meters DW and was giving me the other half as part payment...Looks like he's getting 2 kilts......MAN i can't believe I've done this!!!

I am sorry to hear of your disaster. This may not be the time to ask, but why have belt loops at all?

I have to really watch. I tend to work with the top if the kilt nearest me, and it is easy to forget that left is right and right is left.

Is the spot where you could place a Sporran/Belt Loop loop over the repair?

Or will the straps on the right side fit at that spot?

I think that he meant the button-hole for the strap.

I doesn't sound like a major disaster. A belt or vest will cover it.

That's a bummer, but don't beat yourself up over it. It happens to all of us. If there's a mistake that can be made in kiltmaking, I think I've made nearly all of them. And I'm sure that the ones I haven't made yet I'll eventually make in the future.....

I'm sorry-It wasn't the belt loop hole-It was the hole that is created so the underapron belt can pass through and buckle in. THAT HOLE!!!!! Thanks for the support guys......I'm really actually bummed

I am sorry that I misunderstood you, I think we can blame the Atlantic again! This side of the pond we call those "strap slits"----I think. So yes, I can understand your angst better now. OH HECK!!!!!!

Strap slit is a pretty good descriptive term...I'd think it's probably common here too.

Josh....sorry to hear it...and as with all mistakes, you think it's the most noticable thing....nobody else will know it's there...don't get too down about it. If I may ask....what are "BP" and "DW"? Sitting here scratching my head trying to figure out what tartans you're referring to (assuming they are tartans)?

I was listening to NPR this morning and heard a segment on reconsidering our negative thoughts more objectively. The idea was to avoid frustrating and self-defeating moods by looking at things more subtly than we tend to. I am not disputing your frustration or the error, but consider a few things:

1) the kilt is for a family member, who ought to cut you some slack
2) the repair will be most visible to you
3) most importantly, you CAN repair it. A hole in fabric, unlike a hole in, say GLASS, can be repaired easily and sometimes nigh invisibly.

As others have said, here is the learning process in action. Thanks for warning the rest of us.
