    Good news

It is a bright, beautiful day today in Utah my friends!

I sat down with my husband today, I looked into his eyes and put my hand on his knee and said: "darling, I want to see you in a kilt. Will you please take me to the Utah Scottish Association Ball?"

    AND HE SAID YES!!

I'm a very very happy girl today

So um, now what do I do?

Let's try him out, Ali, and not spend a bundle on unnecessary purchases. This may be the only occasion he will ever wear Highland dress. I know he's 'way across your country, but I suggest you get in touch with Matt at the Museum. He does rentals and he will never lead you and your lad astray.

    Congrats!

Figure out what your needs are (specific tartan/s? budget? etc) and do some research for him so he's not overwhelmed trying to figure out where to start. I actually joined the board so I could find out what our options were for Christopher when he wanted to try a kilt... he rarely posts, although I'm hoping he'll log on here every once in a while. He was busy, so I was willing to do searches on different companies and reviews for what he needed.

I second talking to someone like Matt once you've got an idea of what you need. Also, don't forget to check out some of the photo threads for the various ways to dress up a kilt to let him see his options for different looks (casual, dressy, formal). Don't overwhelm him though!

    Best wishes!

It sounds to me as if the needle has been inserted into his arm. We stand ready to assist in any way. Rental may be a good start, but there may be some specialty items available to borrow if you feel the need to depart from the rental look- or I am sure XMarkers can steer you to bargains and stopgaps if you are looking to build buy a rig.

Knowing his sizes will be a good start

    What fun!

The event is April 23, so you've got some time to work with. I planned ahead a bit farther, and hand-made the kilt that Bob wore to his first Scotsman's Ball, but I wouldn't try it in this timeframe.

I'd line up a rental right away, then spend the interim looking for alternatives to purchase at about-the-same price.

This coming weekend is our Southern Calif event, and I'll be seeing my niece (and her fresh-to-the-kilt fiance) who lives in SLC. I'll pass along the event info, and let you know if it looks as if they (Robin and Steve) might attend. I'm sure knowing there would be another kilted newbie in attendance would lend moral support!

    A few questions Ali

    When is the Ball?
    What is the budget?
Do you think he will wear the kilt again or will this be a one time deal?

Once those questions are answered then I think you could be steered in the right direction.

I don't know yet... (oh boy, this is going to be expensive, isn't it?)
probably a one time deal, He says he'd like to "try it out"

As far as tartan goes, I'm thinking Utah State Tartan, but will that be difficult to find a rental in?

I doubt you will find a rental in the Utah State Tartan. Most rental kilts are made of generic tartans. Buy him a nice kilt pin to personalize the outfit.

Renting a formal kilt, jacket and sporran shouldn't be overly expensive. You will probably need to buy a tux shirt and kilt hose. I am guessing he already has black dress shoes.
