I love the look and might get me to buy some castellated hose if I could figure it out.

Matt made a video demonstration and put it on youtube:

It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

Looks like a cinch knot tied around the loose end (doubled end)--like a single windsor knot. When I get my garters, I mess around with them. But, it looks like the garter was doubled up, wrapped around the calf twice, and the knot was tied. Make sense?

I think he is referring to this example on the STA's web site.

This is not the knot I show how to tie in our video (which you can see here).
The knot being asked about is much more decorative. I used to know how to tie it, once upon a time, but it's been so long I think I'd have trouble now.
Bob Martin had a "how-to" article once upon a time describing how to tie a couple of different styles of garter knots, including this one. I should have a copy of it in a file at the museum. I'll see about digging it up...

Yep--that's the one that looks like a half windsor to me.

That is a great looking knot, but I wonder how it would look as it swings when you walk.

Exactly right, Matt. Saw itn on their site and have searcheed high and low for instructions to no avail. It'd be great if we could add it to the "how to" library here, if you find it.

I can make that knot by bringing the two ends of the tape together and tying a slipknot (aka rail hitch and cow hitch I believe) - but the one pictured has the loop in the loose ends, the 'bunny ears' are drawn from the back, that is the part around the leg,
That might work loose - and although it is less decorative by making the 'bunny ears' from the loose ends and the loop from the part around the leg it would hold the garter tight. It is undone by pulling the loose ends.
I don't know which would be worse - working loose or coming undone if the loose ends caught.
The photo shows the same knot as you see in cowboy films, where the horses take fright, pull loose and run away - the knot I would tie would only tighten when pulled from the horse end.
As a rags-and-sticks sailor I can read and copy most knots, though it is difficult to describe how to make them without a demonstration or diagrams.
