Too young?
I heard what has to be the most amusing thing I have heard directed towards my kilt. I was out at Sherwood Forest Faire near Austin, TX, this past weekend. Upon leaving the Faire to retire to my camp, a woman whose path I crossed called out to me, "You're too young to be wearing a kilt!"
For some reason this woman was resolute that a man had to be 18 to wear a kilt, like it was some kind of right of passage.
I'm over 30 (just shy of double the age she thought me when she made that comment), and I think the list of things I'm "too young" to do has become quite short. Still, it was an amusing opinion she had I suppose it came about from the "requirement" that a kilt be worn regimentally and the fear of a flash should the minor's kilt be uplifted.
So guys, I guess you should all put your young sons' kilts in storage until they come of age ;)

In a way, I agree with her. I won't buy my 11 year old son a nice wool hand tailored kilt. He won't be able to wear it for long the way kids grow. She may have been unaware of the availbility of the less expensive modern variety- or she may have just been rediculous...

Same here! I wouldn't want to be the one to tell my 9 y/o he can't wear his kilts anymore!

My son had his kilt on at less than 2 weeks of age, at the Phoenix Highland games Feb 19, 2008, in his stroller, as well as at three months of age when we visited Edinburgh and Scotland for 10 days. Needless to say he was NOT regimental either time.

So I'm assuming you stopped and talked to her for a bit about it? If so, did you straighten her out on your age and such? I'm curious what became of this conversation, if there was one.
I could probably understand from a woman's perspective that if they are looking for kilted men as "eye candy" (a lot of them do!), they would have some personal opinion as to what's "too young" to look good in a kilt. But that's certainly no reason to yell it at people. If she was mistaken about the kilt as being some sort of 'rite of passage' to adulthood, she needs to be disabused of it.
So what transpired?

Maybe she just thought that the Elder of our kilted brethren looked best in a kilt? As much as I think I pull off a full kilt outfit quite well, I have to say that older gentlemen continually outshine me. :-)

And just when I think I've heard them all! ![Rolling Eyes](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif)
Unfortunatly, I think one hears more bizarre myths about kilts and clothing in general at renfaires than just about anywhere! Fair-folks tend to repeat as gospel many of the 'old wives tales' about kilts and tartan we just joke about here.
On the other hand, While the lady was off base about the 'age limit' thing, I had the pleasure of meeting Lethearen at Sherwood Faire that weekend and I thought he looked like a kid too!

If, in the unlikely event a woman accused me of being half my age, I'd take it as a compliment!

If you think they're bad about kilts, you should hear them talk about swords... There are few times when I, as a knife maker, ever feel the need to abuse someone, but TRF always brings it out in me!

In her obtuse manner and humor her remark was challenge to prove your manliness. She's a woman on the prowl, in want of a strapping stud.
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?
